The second of our content summaries from Maldaba's 4th and final webinar of the year, covers the panel's discussion on common myths surrounding the role of digital in enabling quality services. One common misconception is that certain groups of patients—such as elderly individuals or people with a learning disability—are unable or unwilling to use technology. Glenda shared an example from a workshop she held with young adults with a learning disability. The patients were using an Alexa to find out football scores. One patient’s communication issues meant he was unable to pronounce “Alexa” so therefore the device wasn’t able to respond, resulting in frustration and anxiety for the user. To solve this, a programmer at the workshop created colour-coded buttons as an alternative to voice commands. This is an example of how co-design with users is essential when developing digital solutions. Developers must understand individual needs in order to improve people’s experience of technology and ultimately improve their quality of life. It is important not to assume that patients aren’t able to use technology, but to instead design technology in a way that is accessible to users. Another common myth discussed by the panellists, is that it’s too difficult to implement technology into the NHS. Many staff members feel that developing digital solutions to produce quality service is unachievable due to factors such as cost, usability and the complexity of the issues within healthcare. Tom highlighted the importance of shifting this mindset, emphasising the rapid growth technology is currently undergoing. Over recent years, technology has become increasingly advanced and there is a whole new skillset and capability which can be implemented into healthcare. To overcome doubt from NHS Staff, developers and technology teams must engage closely with healthcare workers, and really understand what co-design and co-production look like in practice. One approach discussed was to remove the word “digital” from “digital innovation”. We must take a holistic view for impactful change, focusing first on understanding the issues at hand before determining how technology can play a role. By prioritising the problem itself rather than starting with the assumption that technology is the solution, healthcare teams can make more impactful and meaningful changes.
