SRK experts to share insights at SAIMM’s upcoming ESG conference SRK Consulting will be an active participant at the upcoming Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) conference on pressing environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues in mining in Africa. The event, featuring plenary and parallel sessions, will focus on ‘ESG in the minerals industry: challenges and opportunities’. It will take place on 16 and 17 October 2024 at Glenburn Lodge and Spa in Muldersdrift near Johannesburg. SRK Consulting will be contributing several presentations – on topics ranging from water stewardship, climate change and air emissions, to tailings facilities, mineral reporting codes and the use of remote sensing technologies to track changes in pollutant concentrations. “ESG is an evolving and vital field that has relevance in every aspect of mining today, and in which SRK has developed a depth of expertise over decades,” said SRK Consulting managing director Andrew van Zyl. “Celebrating our 50th year in 2024, we have long supported the SAIMM’s valuable role in building professional skills and insights in mining, and look forward to another opportunity to share our insights and learn from others.” The plenary session on the first day of the conference will include an address by SRK principal environmental geologist Lindsay Shand on ‘Unpacking the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) water stewardship maturity framework’. The first parallel session on environmental matters will feature two speakers from SRK. Managing director Andrew van Zyl will provide the keynote address for this session, discussing the impact of climate change in the mining industry. Principal civil engineer Justin Walls will talk on incorporating mine closure into tailings storage facility (TSF) design in a paper entitled ‘Back to the future: reverse engineering TSFs for the end land use’. Also contributing to the environmental session, SRK chairman Vis Reddy will draw on work undertaken by SRK in air quality offsets, in his presentation on ‘Opportunities to improve the wellbeing of the most affected communities by reducing emissions from sources other than mining and industry’. In the parallel session on governance on the conference’s second day, SRK principal engineer Andy McDonald will present a talk on integrating ESG into the South African Mineral Reporting Codes (SAMCODES). The sustainability session on the second day will also feature a talk by SRK senior geophysicist Wesley Harrison, entitled ‘Harnessing multispectral data for sustainable mining: Advancing ESG objectives while navigating limitations and exploits’. The conference is validated by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and the South African Council for National Scientific Professionals (SACNASP) so delegates can be credited with continuous professional development (CPD) points. Carbon Sequestration Strategies for Mining Companies and Regulators in Canada As Canada seeks to achieve ambitious climate goals, mining companies and regulators play a key role in the deployment of carbon sequestration technologies. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) can significantly mitigate CO2 emissions from industrial operations, including mining, by capturing carbon dioxide and storing it in geologic formations or transforming it into stable minerals through carbonate mineralization. We explores how mining companies can leverage carbon sequestration techniques, the engineering challenges, and regulatory considerations based on insights from recent research by the US Department of Energy (DoE). The feasibility of CCS projects depends on engineering designs and the complex interactions between CO2, water, and reservoir rocks. Research from the US DoE has shown that understanding these hydrogeochemical processes is vital for ensuring long-term storage efficiency and minimizing leakage risks. Mining companies can apply these findings by thoroughly assessing the mineral composition of tailings and geological settings to determine their suitability for CCS projects. For example, integrating CO2 mineralization into tailings management provides a dual benefit of waste management and carbon sequestration, transforming industrial by-products into stable carbonates that pose less risk of leakage compared to traditional saline aquifers. Canadian mines, particularly those with metal and mineral extraction processes, can benefit from CO2 mineralization. The process locks CO2 in stable carbonate minerals, reducing atmospheric emissions while addressing tailings management challenges. Projects like the Arca pilot at the BHP Mt Keith Nickel Mine have demonstrated the viability of scaling natural CO2 capture in mine tailings. This approach holds particular promise for Canadian mining operations, where vast quantities of mineral tailings are produced annually. Mining companies need to address specific engineering challenges when implementing CCS. These include optimizing reaction kinetics for faster mineralization, conducting life cycle assessments (LCA) to understand the environmental and economic impacts, and ensuring that injection wells and monitoring systems are designed to manage risks like pore clogging. Regulators in Canada must also develop guidelines that reflect these technical challenges while promoting innovation in carbon sequestration technologies. Robust feasibility assessments based on a hydrogeochemical perspective will help mitigate risks and improve the overall success rate of CCS initiatives. Tell us what you want to hear from us. Cascadia Scientific brings fuel saving benefits at Rainy River & Antapaccay New Gold Inc.’s #RainyRiver #gold operation northwest of #FortFrances, #Ontario and Glencore’s Compañía Minera Antapaccay copper mine in #Peru have both benefitted from deployment of #SmartRView technology from Canadian company Cascadia Scientific Inc. on mine #haultrucks which can then be used to identify road segments with higher #fuelintensity, such as uneven grading and inconsistent slopes, and these areas marked for improvements. This has resulted in significant fuel and emissions savings for both mines. #CascadiaScientific uses precision fuel #flowmeters, corrected for temperature and viscosity to capture highly accurate fuel consumption data over short intervals. In 2022, the Rainy River Mine began installation of new equipment on its haul trucks provided by Cascadia Scientific to manage, report and assist in identifying opportunities to reduce haul truck fuel consumption and resulting emissions. It says this technology provides the operations with information such as identifying ‘hot spots’ along the haul road requiring attention, as well as notification when haul trucks accelerate or idle unnecessarily. The data guides the maintenance, operations, dispatch, and training departments to pinpoint areas for real-time improvements. All haul trucks are now fully equipped and Rainy River Mine says it continues to monitor and quantify the GHG emissions data to support achieving its emission reduction goals. This fuel initiative, along with biodiesel supply utilised during warmer months resulted in an annual tracked avoidance of two million litres of fuel and CO2 equivalent reductions of over 7,000 t in 2023, which exceeded Rainy River’s annual target of 3,800 t/CO2 equivalent for its diesel fuel-attributed emissions. Glencore, in collaboration with Cascadia Scientific, conducted a study to improve the haul roads at the Antapaccay mining operation. The study utilised Cascadia’s SmartRView platform for data collection, complemented by precise instrumentation installed on both Komatsu and Caterpillar haul trucks. #Antapaccay worked closely with Cascadia’s data scientists, employing various statistical methods to analyse the data and identify potential enhancements to the #haulroad design. The study utilised Cascadia Scientific’s heat mapping tool to identify road segments with high #fuelintensity. As a result, four main road segments were identified for improvement. With the collaboration of Antapaccay’s operations staff, these road segments were regraded, including one section where the grade was reduced by 0.34%. These road improvements led to cost and environmental benefits amounting to #fuelsavings of US$1.4 million and a reduction of 9,000 t of CO2 emissions. #futureofmining #fuelmonitoring #minehaulroads #mineofthefuture
