Our team are gearing up for an exciting new project: The construction of the brand-new St. Leonard’s Catholic School in Durham, in partnership with BAM UK & Ireland This £71m project will replace the existing school, which has been impacted by RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete)—a lightweight, bubbly concrete widely used in construction between the 1950s and 1990s that has since been found to have significant structural limitations. The new three-storey facility is designed to meet the needs of over 1,000 students, featuring state-of-the-art classrooms, a purpose-built sports hall, assembly and dining spaces, and specialist areas for music, art, and technology. This ambitious project, funded by the Department for Education, is a step forward in providing a safe, inspiring, and future-ready environment for students and staff alike. Working closely with BAM, our team will be delivering: 🔹 Groundworks and substructures 🔹 Specialist foundations for the sports and main buildings 🔹 Drainage systems, including attenuation tanks 🔹 Extensive external works and landscaping We’re proud to be part of this transformation, creating a foundation for the future for the Durham community. Stay tuned for updates as we progress on this exciting journey! #EducationConstruction #Collaboration #GRKCivils #BuildingTheFuture https://lnkd.in/gKrB_Drw

Five years ago in August, Jones County K-12 School had its grand opening. And where are we now? ⭐ The school has produced more than 6 billion watts of electricity. ⭐ It produces EXCESS electricity 78% of the time. ⭐ It has provided over 1 billion watts of excess electricity back to the grid. ⭐ The school provides an average of 18 million watts of excess electricity each month. ⭐ The school has saved taxpayers more than half a million dollars in utility costs. ⭐ The school is producing more electricity now than it did five years ago when we started it up. In fact, June 2024 was the highest production month we have ever had. That is the power of #bigpicture thinking. And that is what SfL+a Architects is all about. The Department for Education has recently released a new piece of guidance to help school building owners and maintenance staff identify building systems and prioritise maintenance and repair of their school estate. Now that the DfE has concluded its RAAC management, with all schools identified having plans in place to remove it or remove its load bearing role, this new guidance is an indication of a move to get ahead of other structural issues that exist within the school estate. In this blog post we provide an overview of why educational establishments should pay attention to the release of this new guidance, as well as recommendations on how to take a proactive approach to managing the structural safety of education estates. https://lnkd.in/eCBFNmzd #EducationEstates #RAAc #RAACGuidance #SchoolBuildings
