Stonehenge and Avebury the island possesses the finest prehistoric monuments in Europe. Stonehenge is the more familiar and sensational, often described and painted, as in Turner's and Constable's watercolours. The subtlety and complexity of this extraordinary monument preclude detailed description here. It was being built and reshaped during three distinct periods over several hundred years, longer than was the case with most medieval cathedrals, though during its successive transformations the main axis always remained aligned to midsummer sunrise. The last stage in its shaping seems to have been about 1900 to 1500 BC, when *a pitch of architectural refinement was achieved unparalleled in the prehistoric West'. These huge stones have almost imperceptible swelling like Greek columns, the architrave curves inward to make a circle, the laterals are morticed and tenoned to fit the uprights and shaped to the perspective from the ground. An inner circle was formed of bluestones brought all the way - 200 miles - from Wales. All around are the cemeteries of these people, some three hundred barrows; a long avenue of stones went down to a stream. All this is not only a standing witness to what primitive manpower could shift - that is obvious enough - but a marvel of sophisticated planning and design. #1transcribedtext #1transcribedtextbydinescu #HeritageOfBritainALRowse

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK | “Recovery of the Real Fábrica de Paños de Brihuega, Guadalajara” by Juan de Dios de la Hoz Martínez “The most appropriate methodology for intervening in this type of historical projects is always based on a prior exhaustive process of historical research, followed by field work necessary to draw up the planimetric survey and the pathological study. The main goal of this restoration was to bring back the identity of the building and to recover the rich spaces that had disappeared under the rubble. Thus, the work carried out was based on reconstruction and not on demolition, on the use of the same constructive systems and traditional materials found in the buildings, and on the integration of the archeological remains that appeared during the works, since they are also part of the history of the building.” Read the article: https://lnkd.in/dv_hs-KC #traditionalbuilding #traditionalarchitecture #buildingtrades #heritage #heritagepreservation #restoration Juan de Dios de la Hoz Martinez

Along with the basilica and triumphal arch, the amphitheatre was the only significant new construction type created by the Romans. Amphitheatres, of which there are over 200 known and many of which are in good preservation, like the one at Arles and its progenitor, the Colosseum in Rome, are among the most striking examples of secular architecture. They were used for public contests, public shows, gladiatorial matches, and bullfights—a custom that is still practiced in Portugal and Spain. “𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬?” We get a lot of inspiration from other titles of the genre and we like competition, so we ended up answering this question and going where some more famous titles don’t go! YES we can have canyons, caves, tunnels and arches! 😜 Every time the morphology of the map changes, also the path finding changes accordingly 😎 #SkunkyTown #DevDiary #IndieGameDev #IndieGame

(Re-)construction and restoration are not the same thing. Do not be fooled: The fact that construction activities are taking place at the historic building along Frontstreet which has come to be known as the L’ Escargot Building (Frontstreet # 96) does not mean that this landmark building is being restored to its former glory! Although the building has undergone many changes over the years prior to it having been registered as a National Monument in 2009, the changes the building is undergoing now will render it unrecognizable to those who know the building well. (compare the two older images (top) to the image of the building as it is now (bottom image) Just look at the porch railings!! While the building has been a registered monument for over 15 years and any structural changes to the building would require an approval of the proposed plan by means of special permissions from Government e.g. a “Monument Permit” and a building Permit, no such Permits or permissions have been granted, rendering the activities illegal and putting us all at risk of losing the historical aesthetics of yet another monumental building. In 1956, #Venice undertook an extraordinary project known as the "Svolte di Popolazio," or the People's Revolution, to drain and clean its canals for the first time in centuries. This massive civic effort aimed to improve #sanitation and #restore the historic waterways. Over the years, Venice's canals had accumulated silt, debris, and waste, leading to unsanitary conditions and threatening the city's architectural heritage. The draining and cleaning process involved meticulous planning and labor-intensive work by engineers, workers, and volunteers. As the water was pumped out, hidden treasures like lost artifacts, sunken boats, and ancient structures were revealed. Cleanup crews removed tons of sediment, debris, and rubbish through dredging and excavation, restoring the canals to their original depth and clarity. This monumental effort not only improved sanitation and aesthetics but also highlighted the importance of preserving Venice's unique cultural and historical identity. The project symbolized civic pride, community effort, and a commitment to Venice's cultural legacy, making it a historic moment that showcased the resilience and beauty of the city's iconic waterways. #Venice #SvolteDiPopolazio #1956 #CanalCleaning #HistoricPreservation #CivicPride #CulturalHeritage #VenetianHistory #WaterwayRestoration #CommunityEffort #HistoricVenice #ItalianHistory #PreserveVenice #VenetianCanals

🌟 Exciting Thoughts on Decarbonizing Structures! 🌟 "If we were to make a list of what we want from our structures, we would come up with something similar: STRONG, absolutely; RESILIENT, for the demands of a changing world; MAINTENANCE FREE; PLACE-ENHANCING; and LOW CARBON over the whole life." 🏗️ Indeed, the quest for sustainable solutions leads us to rethink traditional materials. Callum Gillett for shedding light on the timeless benefits of structural stone. It's a solution HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT for centuries! 💡 Let's collectively embrace #decarbonizestructures and join the #stonecollective movement.
