According to a recent survey by BDO, nearly half of private equity fund managers and portfolio-company finance chiefs believe that private-equity-owned businesses lack sufficient staff, especially in crucial finance roles. The shortage of skilled professionals is further exacerbated by the struggle to find individuals capable of navigating the challenges posed by high-interest rates and diminishing investment exit opportunities. As a result, 54% of CFOs and board members at portfolio companies express doubts about achieving their private equity owners' investment goals. The slowdown in deal-making and rising credit costs have made leadership roles at portfolio companies more critical, determining the success of business objectives and investment targets. To meet heightened expectations, private-equity firms closely scrutinize company performance and raise standards for executives. The survey also emphasizes the difficulty in finding qualified CFOs with relevant experience in private capital, further complicating the hiring process for portfolio companies. It's generally accepted that not all finance roles are the same, but it's not always acknowledged that the ideal personalities for each role are different, too. Earlier I caught up with an FD in my network, he shared something on his mind. I observed that in my experience, within a finance function, if you have a team or an individual that you rely on to "dot the I's and cross the T's," ensuring the integrity of the regulatory reporting, and a team or individual that focuses on the commercial, "value-add," operational side of finance, you can expect some "healthy friction" at times. 😬 If there isn't, my concern would be that one function is not doing its job properly. In a business growing at a rate of knots, the commercial side of finance is speedy and has a keen eye on materiality, while everyone relies on the technical finance role to ensure the massive numbers running through the reports are accurate and stand up to scrutiny – essentially a lengthy painstaking job. "You're very good at what you do, Natalie. You've read between the lines and hit the nail on the head," he told me. 🔨 My placements historically stay with my clients for 5-8 years+ because a robust recruitment campaign delivers results that stand the test of time. Recruitment isn't rocket science (or brain surgery!), but it is much more than just generating CVs and matching an individual's experience with a list of duties on a job spec. Cracks can begin to show if an individual's personality isn't considered or their values are misaligned with the organisation's culture. When the employer lets the individual go, they often say, "We were just very unlucky; on paper, they could do the role."🤞 As my first recruitment boss, Sue Cooper used to say, "Natalie, we make our own luck in recruitment."
