This Deaf Awareness Week, let's turn up the volume on inclusivity! We recognise that #diversity isn't just about what we can see or hear. With 12 million people in the UK experiencing some form of deafness, it's crucial that our workplaces reflect and accommodate this diversity. Did you know that #BritishSignLanguage is an official language since 2003? Yet, many D/deaf individuals still face significant barriers in accessing services and information. It's not just about hearing—the D/deaf community has its own rich culture, history, and identity. Here’s how we can all foster a more inclusive environment: - Always face the person you're talking to. - Speak clearly, slowly, and ensure your mouth is visible. - Be patient, repeat, or rephrase if needed. Let’s embrace these practices not just this week but every day to create a workplace where everyone can thrive. 💛🖤 #DeafAwarenessWeek #Inclusion #Diversity #BSL #Accessibility #MahoganyInclusionPartners

I arrived home earlier from a summit, and my children said, "Oh, they didn't have ASL interpreters?" That's becoming common knowledge in our household. It's time we recognize that providing ASL interpreters at webinars, summits, and public meetings should be a standard of practice—not an afterthought. Ensuring access to ASL interpreters is crucial for empowering Deaf individuals to participate fully in discussions. It's not merely an accommodation; it's a necessary component for inclusivity. When event organizers take the initiative to provide these services, they shift the responsibility away from individuals needing support. This promotes a culture of accessibility and equality. #Accessibility #DeafCommunity #ASLInterpreter #Access

Who else noticed the powerful accessibility for Deaf and hard of hearing folks during the DNC? As someone deeply invested in making the world more deaf-friendly, I was thrilled to see both captions and ASL interpreters ensuring that the Deaf/hh community could fully engage. It’s also inspiring to see President Biden, a member of the disability community himself proving that inclusion isn't just possible, it's essential. Let's keep pushing for more of this in every space. Closed captions are visible, highlighting Biden's words, and an ASL interpreter can be seen on the right side of the screen. It is circled with an arrow. In every space! It can be done. It can even be improved. It can be normalized. Inclusion starts with thinking about others before the event starts. Love to see this! #languageaccess #interpreters #captions

Around 50 percent of #women in the deaf community experience #domesticviolence. #Research suggests the deaf community report experiencing victimization at higher rates, but a lack of accessible resources and trauma-informed services for American Sign Language speakers make it difficult for deaf people to report crimes and access support. In this report, Urban provides recommendations for how New York City’s Barrier Free Living (BFL) and similar direct service programs can improve and adapt staffing, services, and outreach to strengthen their response to deaf survivors. See Urban’s additional recommendations and findings from our evaluation of BFL’s program. https://urbn.is/3zWYLwl
