I have an issue with children's literature. Long gone are the days when people told children stories just for the joy of a well-told story. Beginning a long time ago, someone somewhere decided that a story meant for children must teach the child something. Children's literature has become a long, moralizing sermon beating children about their heads and shoulders with lessons in virtue. The joy of a well-told story has vanished. If you're writing a children's book, consider why you're writing it. Are you just one more adult in a long parade of authors attempting to pound yet one more moral lesson into young readers' heads? Revisit your favorite books from that time in your life when you were the same age as the children for whom you're writing. Why were those your favorite books? Were those books your favorites because they preached at you or because they entertained you? Was it the rhyming verse or the descriptive language that captured your attention? Did the book have wonderful illustrations upon which you feasted your eyes as someone read the story to you? The presence of lessons in children's literature isn't necessarily a bad thing; however, like Mary Poppins said, a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down. Make the lesson secondary—or even tertiary—to the story to help the "medicine" go down. No one likes to be preached at, not even children. #henhousepublishing #childrensliterature

One of the biggest challenges for running a library for children in school is creating interest in reading books. Reading is an organic process that requires the opportunity to talk about what one reads and learn to move from decoding text to scanning ideas, and everything in between. Engaging children in reading involves finding connections between books and their daily life experiences, both metaphorically and concretely. Metaphorical connections help in theorizing experiences and looking for explanations in different life semantics such as art and poetry. It’s important to spark their imagination and curiosity to make reading an enjoyable experience. #ChildrensBooks #ReadingIsFun #LibraryLife #EducationMatters #EarlyLiteracy #ReadingRocks 📖 Let's continue to inspire a love for reading in our little ones and help them develop a lifelong passion for books!

Today more than anytime, we need to go back to reading children's books. Books that challenge the limits of our imagination and gently nudge us to take a break from reality without losing sight of it. Books that hold villains accountable regardless of their success, reminding us of our moral values and encouraging us to grow into better versions of ourselves. Next time you're in a bookstore on the hunt for self-development, slide towards the children's literature section and you'll find a treasure trove of wisdom, packaged in simple, jargon-free words meant for the child in all of us. Plus, they come with delightful illustrations! #ChildrensBooks #Imagination #SelfDevelopment #IllustratedWisdomWords

It does NOT teach them to read. It does develop phonemic awareness (building block to decoding), builds their vocabulary word bank, background knowledge, comprehension skills, and helps them to enjoy reading and understand it as part of their day…..
Reading to children does not teach them to read. It DOES: Introduce a higher level of language/vocabulary than we mostly use on a daily basis; Introduce and get them familiar with sentence structures of many different kinds; Introduce a variety of story sequences; Allow them to see concepts from other’s points of view; Gain new knowledge; Improve listening comprehension; Garner a love of books and reading… Read aloud daily from fiction and non-fiction books. #literacyforall #libraries #dyslexiasupport #homeschool #readaloud #reading

3moI'm not worried about people who love books. They will always find books to read, spend time in libraries and bookstores, discover hidden gems. I'm more worried about people who don't love books, people who don't read, whose highest education is tiktok academy. How can we get them to read more, or at least a bit?
