One of the biggest highlights of IWiM’s #IDWIM2024 event was the Breaking Ground in Belonging panel discussion, which dug deeper into this year’s theme ‘I am Mining and I Belong’. The panellists came from diverse backgrounds and brought a wealth of experience in the mining industry. Some of the insights they shared on the daily actions that everyone can do to increase belonging include: “It’s a lot of small things done consistently that create belonging … be aware of the impact words can have, think before you talk. When you make a mistake, like we all do, like I’ve done it, say sorry and take accountability.” - Chelsea Williams, Director of Digital Operations, Teck Resources Limited “Active listening plays a crucial role in this. By generally listening to the experiences and ideas of others, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued and understood. This simple yet powerful act can foster inclusion, drive innovation and build a stronger, more cohesive team.” - Rebecca Peacock, Concentrator Director Liberia, ArcelorMittal Mining “To me, the simple act of kindness goes a long way! We need to encourage open dialogue to understand each other and what we are doing.
