⚠️ The US NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration declared a global coral bleaching event overnight—the fourth global event on record and the second in the last 10 years. This declaration, and more evidence of the mass bleaching event occurring on the Great Barrier Reef, is a stark reminder of the entirely predictable consequences of extensive global warming for Australia and the planet. Question: In light of the most recent scientific reports and global environmental policies, i have couple of important questions:- 1. How has public awareness and behavior towards global warming evolved? 2. Comment the key factors that have influenced this change and the role of governmental and non-governmental organizations in shaping public perception and actions towards mitigating global warming?

Humans are responsible for 100% of modern global warming. This was true in 2017 when we published the article below – and it's still true today. The decade 2014-2023 was 1.19C hotter than 1850-1900. And the combined impact of human-caused warming was…1.19C. https://lnkd.in/en_maQeZ https://lnkd.in/eeNF6yYg

This is an alarming trend. In 5 days' time we'll know (unless the result is held up in bogus claims of rigged voting, invalid court appeals, etc etc) the future of US climate change policy. I wonder if anyone has any up-to-date stats for Australia with respect to concerns over climate change and voter's political preferences? My gut feel is that it has become more polarised. An article in The Conversation in 2021 of a study done in the context of the 2019 federal election found: • Half of Australian voters (52%) said climate change was important when deciding their vote in the 2019 Australian federal election. However, climate was the most important issue for only 14% of voters. • Three quarters (73%) of progressive voters (those voting for the ALP or the Greens) see Australian action to reduce emissions as “extremely important”. Only one quarter (26%) of conservative voters say the same thing. • Climate change was stated as the most important issue for 21% of Labor voters and 39% of Greens voters, but for less than 5% of Liberal Party, National Party, and Queensland LNP voters. #climatechange #USelection #globalwarming #climatecrisis
In 2000, over 60% of self-identified US Republicans said they worried about global warming "a great deal" or "a fair amount". In 2024, 70% of self-identified US Republicans say they worry about global warming "only a little" or "not at all".

Delusion, overconfidence, stupidity or ignorance? It is neither a complete surprise nor does it bring much comfort or hope but in a matter of 25 years, self-identified US Republicans went from being 60% to be greatly or fairly concerned by climate change to being 40% not at all worried (with an additional 30% only a little worried). It is difficult to understand how this can be and came to be but the consequences of this “mood” are all but uncertain and will be unequivocally unpleasant if, as you would expect, it undermines climate action in the US. While we have all we need for the net zero transition (knowledge, technology, economics, finance, policy, etc. go check the IPCC AR6 synthesis report if you still have some doubts), the single most critical ingredient might be the most unstable and inflammable one: politics. In the end, if we fail (despite having all the key ingredients at hand), we would have to face the fact that a single generation (and, let’s be honest, some more than others) would have messed up our civilisation and the future of humanity orders of magnitude more than any other preceding generation - externalities (across space and time) on steroids… And generations to come will be left with one question: were they delusional, overconfident, stupid or what? Because, ignorant would be challenging to argue…
