A Roadmap for Decarbonizing Europe's Car Fleet by 2050 The European Commission has announced an ambitious -90% CO2 reduction target for the EU economy by 2040. To achieve this in the transport sector, we need a comprehensive strategy to clean up not just new car sales, but the entire existing car fleet across Europe. Transport & Environment's new report lays out a "Road-to-Zero" pathway that would: 1. 🚗 Maintain the 2035 phase-out of new internal combustion engine (ICE) car sales, which is essential for reducing emissions 57% by 2040 2. 🔋 Accelerate battery electric vehicle (BEV) uptake in corporate fleets to 100% by 2030, bringing more affordable used BEVs to market 📉 Phase out remaining 73 million ICE cars by 2050 through: a. Scrappage schemes and mobility packages for low-income drivers b. E-retrofitting older ICEs to convert them to electric powertrains 3. ⛔ Avoid growth in car travel demand through better urban planning, modal shift to public transit/active transport, and limiting new road construction By combining these measures, their analysis shows the EU car fleet could reach zero emissions by 2050 while providing clean, affordable solutions for all drivers to make the transition. In My view, This comprehensive roadmap demonstrates that decarbonizing transport is technically feasible with the right policy measures. But it requires going beyond just new car CO2 standards to address the existing vehicle fleet and mobility patterns. Policymakers must act urgently on all fronts. What do you think are the biggest barriers and opportunities for decarbonizing Europe's car fleet by 2050? I'm keen to hear perspectives from others working on sustainable mobility solutions. #ZeroEmissionTransport #CleanMobility #RoadtoZero

🌍Boosting Sustainability Through Longer Vehicle Lifespans A new report from the International Transport Forum (ITF) highlights that extending the lifespan of shared micromobility vehicles has significantly cut CO2 emissions. Since 2020, emissions per kilometer have dropped by over 40% for shared e-scooters and e-bikes, and over 50% for shared bicycles.🚴🛴 “Increased vehicle lifetime enables more rides per vehicle resulting in less emissions per ride, as a significant part of the life-cycle emissions for micromobility vehicles are imputable to the construction of the vehicle,” said Pierpaolo Cazzola, Director of the European Transport and Energy Research Centre and co-author of the report. Additionally, the ITF recommends operators to focus on durability and repairability of vehicles, and suggests public authorities to offer conditional incentives based on environmental impact. By extending vehicle lifespan, emissions from manufacturing are spread over more rides, making each ride greener.🌱 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eHpVzZsU #bikeshare #bikesharing #micromobility

Here is a great reminder that e-bikes have a MASSIVE role to play in the global energy transition. "US researchers estimate that if e-bike trips expanded to 11 percent of all vehicle trips, transport emissions would fall by about 7 percent." Now imagine the impact if we could do this globally... From safer paths & roads to convenient battery charging, it's time get the infrastructure riders need in place! https://lnkd.in/dG5Jik9R #emobility #urbanmobility #ebike #ebikebatterycharging #batterystorage #transportation #sustainability #PowerShelter

🚗🌞 E-Mobility: Solution or Smokescreen? 🌞🚗 sleek, solar-powered cars blazing through the rugged, stunning Australian outback. These amazing vehicles, powered only by the sun, are giving us a glimpse of the future. But is our current electric mobility just a pit stop on the way to these solar wonders? 🌟 Electric cars are everywhere now, but are they too big and bulky? Wouldn't smaller, lighter cars be more practical and efficient? Imagine zipping around in a compact car that sips energy and is easy to park. 🚙💡 Why Smaller Solar Cars Could Be the Future: ✅Efficiency: Less energy needed to run. ✅Practicality: Easier to park and drive. ✅Cost-Effective: Cheaper to make and maintain. ✅Eco-Friendly: Fewer resources used and lower emissions. Seeing solar cars race across the outback makes us wonder: is this what's next? Could solar cars be the answer for tomorrow? We need to innovate and be open to change. 🌏 Have we made a mistake with the design of the current e-cars and taken a completely wrong turn? Isn't the reason for this entire change in drive type from combustion to electric cars environmental protection? But does that even make sense? 🚌 Where are the concepts for public transport? Car sharing, or even just small cars? I see almost exclusively large cars with electric drives and an insane amount of horsepower. It makes no sense at all to change an entire system but not adapt the concept of mobility. 🚗🛺 How do you see it? Smaller solar-powered cars show us that big isn't always better. They challenge us to rethink our transportation and go green. Let's dream of a future where every car is a sleek, sun-powered marvel! 🌞✨ Join the conversation and explore the exciting possibilities of solar cars.
