More than 50 countries are experiencing “severe” declines in freedom. Only about 20% of the global population is said to live in truly free nations. This is worth remembering every day. These trends are more alarming in the context of countless other threats. From armed conflict and oppression to the manmade planetary crisis, the world is not short of material challenges.

As nearly half the world’s people vote to elect their next leader or legislature this year, #BTeam co-founder Sir Richard Branson (founder, Virgin Group) warns that democracy itself is “on the ballot.” Citizens and business leaders alike have a central role to play in strengthening democratic institutions because: 1️⃣ Democracy provides a stable, predictable environment for businesses to operate and grow; 2️⃣ Democracy fosters accountability and collaboration, which are key to building trust; 3️⃣ Democracy promotes innovation and competition — two cornerstones of economic progress; and 4️⃣ Democracy empowers citizens and stakeholders to have a voice in decision-making processes. Even when I disagree with the principles and philosophies other people want to apply, I believe we can agree on what needs to be addressed, I come from the position that leaders are here to solve problems within the communities we serve. That does not require a corporate or a global agenda. We who have had opportunities need to engage as individuals rather than advocate for others to solve it as we watch. Thus, I agree with organizations that engage the people closest to the issue and support them collaboratively. There is plenty to solve so we will always need more personal action and less political reliance because the local solutions will not allow us to provide "one size fits all" solutions. No, I do not want corporations to solve this when we can locally. I want corporations to stick to what they do best and let us solve what is close to our hearts; our communities. #strategicthinking
