My brother, Pete Barr from Makerversity, just won the 2024 Red Bull Soapbox Race. He’s an Industrial Designer — so our fields overlap — and his success got me thinking about the value of impermanence. The Red Bull Soap Box Race is a one-and-done affair. You build the rally car; you drive the rally car; you smash the rally car. You literally race the thing into a skip. Make stuff, break stuff. It’s great fun, hours of labour, and it’s over in under a minute. My job, on the other hand, is focused on creating lasting digital solutions. Trying to find systems and strategies that obsolesce the ones that preceded them. Build “things that last” or create “enduring behaviour change”. Ever tried to effect some “enduring behaviour change” in yourself? It’s extremely hard. Pete's triumph celebrates the exact opposite: the joy of ephemerality. Of creating something completely transient. Maybe I need to take a leaf out of my brother's book and break a few more things. Build something just to have fun throwing it away. Clearly there’s some success to be had with that. So here's to my brother, the destroyer, Michelangelo of the scrapheap 👨🎨

Houdini Circle, where everything can be either bought, rented or subscribed to, regardless of new or used, continue to spark interest!   Thank you Gertjan Dieleman and the rest of the Ingka Centres team visiting from Malmö and Shanghai for the conversation, inputs and questions. I got the chance to share the holistic reasoning behind Houdini Circle.   In a Circle Economy, natural resources, like textile fibers aren’t ours to take and waste -we are custodians of these assets and it’s part of our responsibility, and a basic principle in circular design, to also design for the next life phase. In accordance with this principle, it is natural to transition away from user ownership and enable us to better control and care for the raw materials full cycle.   In order to fly, though, the holistic approach must be commercially viable and deliver a better experience to the user. And while this still is breaking new ground compared to conventional retail, the emerging customer is expecting to be able to access their products in the way that is most suitable to them.   But the devil is in the details and for a model like this to be successful we need systems excellence in the backend and robust pricing models. Thank you, Julia Blomstergren at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) for coming by to explain some of the processes that BCG helped us to develop.   The continuous work of challenging the norm of ownership, and blurring the line between new and used, together with our users and cocreators, I believe will be a Houdini Sportswear milestone that will help shift the mindset around consumption! #circulareconomy #sustainability #retail
