100% off grid communities are already here. In the Geos neighborhood, heat pumps, solar and energy efficiency abound ☀️🔋🌍 In the race for the first ever zero emissions community my money has been on The City of Bakersfield but it seems like a new player has entered the game. And in the race for becoming sustainable, competition is always healthy! Geos is an all-electric neighborhood of 28 homes boasting extreme energy-efficient designs. Ventilation of the homes (for instance) is done through a system called CERV, a device that harvests thermal energy from the air leaving your home and uses it to precool or preheat filtered air coming in. Now there is still a way to go for 100% emissions free, Geos still pull dirty energy from the grid occasionally at night. The community argues that the surplus of energy generated during the day far offsets these dips, but then again - thats not how energy works. Batteries would fix this issues for 100% true sustainability, not just on paper🔋 These are small nitpickings and founder norbert klebl and the team at GEOS Neighborhood should be praised for all their hard work. Through a three-year pilot with NW Natural, we worked to boost energy efficiency in Cottage Grove and Creswell. By completing energy-saving projects in their homes and businesses, local customers collectively saved up to 61% more natural gas than they would have without the community-focused effort. But it's not just about saving money on utility bills—it's about building a more sustainable future for everyone. By reducing energy consumption, communities can avoid costly infrastructure upgrades and create a more flexible power grid. And the best part? This is just the beginning!
