For the first time, researchers in Germany have created laboratory dog skin that can be used to test new treatments for dogs in place of animal testing. The skin mimics real canine skin and can show scientists how certain dermatological medicines and care products will work with great accuracy. The scientists behind the skin plan on extending the new technology to other species, such as horses and cats. UAR recognises and celebrates advances in scientific innovation to phase in non-animal methods. The FHAIVE research center (The Finnish Hub for Development and Validation of Integrated Approaches) at Tampere University is focused on developing alternatives to chemical and drug testing that does not involve animals. This includes body-on-a-chip technology that can replicate how the human body responds to new chemicals and drugs. Additionally, they are exploring how artificial intelligence can be used to collect and analyze existing data to help scientists develop new therapeutics. Replacing animal testing is urgent, not only because of its inherent cruelty but also because animals do not accurately mimic human physiology. Dr. Dario Greco, head of FHAIVE, states “People are not mice. Things we learn in animal models may not reliably predict what happens in humans.
