We had the privilege of attending TD Cowen Inc.'s Glowing Ahead: Beauty & Wellness Summit yesterday in New York City, which has us now reflecting on the beauty industry (with a special round of applause for Andrew Stanleick, who shared his insights on the convergence of healthcare, beauty, and wellness during a panel discussion.) On a similar note, this week we've come across an interesting article exploring the prestige beauty category, which has seen impressive growth in recent years. Rachel Brown at Beauty Independent asks industry executives and experts to weigh in: is prestige beauty at its peak? What challenges or opportunities are on the horizon? Two particularly notable insights come from Cristina Nuñez of True Beauty Ventures and Andrew Ross for XRC Ventures, who both challenge the notion of prestige beauty peaking, honing in on an increasingly educated and well-researched consumer who actively seeks out higher quality products to achieve specific results.  Karen Hayes of Indie Global Strategies emphasizes the need for beauty brands to pursue international expansion, spotlighting partnerships with non-US-based retailers like MECCA Brands, Niche-Beauty.COM GmbH, and Oh My Cream ! as avenues for growth.  Margarita Arriagada of Valdé Beauty suggests turning our attention to the masstige beauty category, which faces oversaturation and profitability challenges posed by low-margin products. Love when Rachel Brown raises a thought provoking question like “Is prestige beauty hitting it’s peak?” For most of us in the beauty industry, our gut answer is a resounding NO. Just look at the consistent annual growth of the overall prestige category vs mass and the growth across all sub-categories as reported by Larissa Jensen at Circana💥. But as an investor who also sees how absolutely back breaking it is to build an indie prestige beauty brand, it is undoubtedly getting harder and harder to succeed. The TL;DR is that I don’t believe prestige has hit its peak and there are many category tailwinds that will continue to drive growth such as ✔️higher income prestige beauty consumers willing to pay full price for products they want, ✔️the growing influence of TikTok to drive more impulse, less price sensitive purchases, and ✔️younger beauty consumers flocking to specialty beauty retail for premium products, to name a few. But for indie brands, scale and success requires entering a fiercely competitive specialty beauty channel, achieving growth while maintaining profitability while also investing in brand and trade marketing (no biggie right? 😳) and experimenting with new ways to engage consumers and keep them loyal. All this to say, prestige beauty is not at its peak, but competition, saturation, and probability of failure might be. The more reason to go into this beautiful and, at times, ugly industry with eyes wide open, a tolerance for pain, and an experienced partner by your side 💫.
