Groups of professionals wearing slick business attire are ushered through the impressive space to private executive conference centers. Clusters of students utilize the large study pods to collaborate on projects. The delicious smells from the international café fill the space with warmth and invite the occupants to stay and eat. This isn’t the Google or Apple headquarters, it’s the brand-new Robert and Avron Fogelman Business Complex. This vision for the newly renovated Fogelman College of Business & Economics, University of Memphis (FCBE) will soon be a reality. The renovation of the FCBE buildings is not just about updating the bricks and mortar; it acts as a bold promise to continue shaping the future of business education, and the Memphis community, for the better. With the structure officially topped off yesterday, I’m energized by the potential impact of A&M’s presence here, turning downtown Fort Worth into a dynamic hub for innovation and opportunity. It's all tied together. Politics, real estate, education, and place making. Related Ross is a major developer in Palm Beach county, owning office, residential, retail, and hotel. To make the county even more vibrant, they are helping create a new graduate school for Vanderbilt University in West Palm Beach. Ross said, "There’s no place that’s ever grown that doesn’t have great universities, great schools.” He's right. A vision for any great city today must include a variety of real estate and people to succeed. What makes New York so successful is the mix of everything it has here, including business people but also students, medical workers, the arts, etc. Great developers are also extremely skilled politically. Is it a Rosenwald School? When you see an early 20th-century school building, how can you determine if it is a Rosenwald school? Certain architectural characteristics will be present in Rosenwald schools. 1. “Read” the building for information! Rosenwald schools had distinguishing features, the most noticeable being tall, narrow batteries of windows. Even if windows have been altered or filled in, the original configuration may still be evident. Most schools were built on short piers, sometimes enclosed by skirting. Smaller schools are generally plain, rectangular frame structures. Look for hipped or clipped gable roofs on Tuskegee plan schools and gable roofs on community school plan buildings. Inside, the walls may still feature blackboards above the wainscot, movable blackboards or folding partitions joining rooms, a stage at the end of one classroom, and small cloakrooms for coats and personal items. Larger schools may be built in an "H" plan with auditoriums, stages, and offices, along with cloakrooms. Sites may still include playing fields, vocational buildings, a teacher’s home, and privies. 2. Do Your Research! The plans and examples in this publication provide an overview of the basic Rosenwald designs. Look for copies of The Negro Rural School and Its Relation to the Community and Community School Plans at major libraries and state archives. Collections are housed at Fisk University’s Franklin Library in Nashville, TN. A portion of those records has been digitized and is available online at http://rosenwald.fisk.edu. Much of the information needed to confirm a Rosenwald school can be found locally. County school records, local residents, and local histories can get you started. State archives housing state education department records or school insurance records may also reveal photo collections and other valuable records. Many state historic preservation offices have identified the Rosenwald schools in their state or have websites with additional information. Dublin School Plans Major Transformation: A Taste of the Future in Fairview Here's an exciting piece of news for Dubliners! St. Joseph’s CBS Secondary School, under the Edmund Rice Schools Trust, is taking a big leap into the future. More classrooms, modern facilities, and even a sensory garden are part of the blueprint for this major refurbishment project. The school, located in the heart of Fairview, is set to gain three general classrooms, a home economics room, a multimedia room, and improved toilet facilities. Locker space and an electrical room are also part of the plan. And for those concerned with accessibility, a universal access toilet is on the cards too. St. Joseph’s isn’t just thinking about the here and now. The project also includes the refurbishment and reconfiguration of existing rooms to make way for a four-classroom SEN base with a multi-activity room. But the cherry on top? A 200 m2 hard and soft play area and a 100 m2 sensory garden, adding an extra touch of nature and tranquillity to the school environment. Now, for the numbers: the upgraded school will have a main floor area of 527.5 m2 and a gross floor area, including circulation and internal walls, of 598.0m2. While all this sounds impressive, the project will also involve knocking down the existing covered shelter of 210m2. Dundee and Angus College has unveiled plans for a £265m redevelopment - which could include some significant relocations. The college is exploring moving its Dundee campus to a new facility at the city's Wellgate Shopping Centre and moving its Arbroath campus into the town centre - possibly at the Abbeygate Shopping Centre. This would involve closing the college's existing Kingsway campus in Dundee and its campus in Arbroath. The college said its third campus at Gardyne in Dundee would be expanded and developed to include a green skills and innovation hub.
