Family Dollar Axed in 1,000 Store Closure Big news for bargain hunters! Dollar Tree, the parent company of Family Dollar, announced a surprising move to close roughly 1,000 stores across the two brands. This significant shift comes after the company reported a disappointing financial quarter. Family Dollar Feels the Bigger Pinch The brunt of the closures lands on Family Dollar. Dollar Tree plans to shutter 600 Family Dollar locations in the first half of 2024, with an additional 370 slated for closure over the next few years as leases expire. Only 30 Dollar Tree stores themselves will face closure. This translates to roughly 12% of all Family Dollar locations disappearing from the retail landscape. Why the Big Cutback? The RealReal reported slowing growth and a not-so-great outlook for Q2. June and July are known for bargain hunting at TRR, so it's not surprising that they have concerns. However, August usually marks an upturn in sales, and October usually caps off the best product hauls. It's expected that TRR will increase its TV advertising budget to attract more buyers and consignors in Q3. You can’t always control how much money you make. But you can control how much money you spend. We are approaching Q4 shopping frenzy. RETAIL lives for these few months. So many companies are just trying to survive earlier on in the year. Holiday season makes or breaks the company. The key is making sure people are aware of what you sell and how it fulfils a need. There’s two types of needs. 1. Extrinsic- something external like my fridge broke so I need a new one. Pretty Simple. 2. Intrinsic- it must also satisfy an internal desire. An Example of an INTRINSIC DESIRE: I cannot pay more than $1000 for a fridge. Anything more is a waste of money. But it needs to have two simple functions. Side by side doors and water dispenser. This happened to my dad recently. So when he went to the appliance superstore, the type he wanted was $2000 and up! He scoped out the entire store. He finds a hidden section where it’s not as lit or nice as the rest of the showroom. In this area were DAMAGED appliances. He sees a stainless steel fridge marked down from $2400 to $800. He asks the associates why is it so cheap. The associate responded that the side of the fridge was damaged. My dad laughs and says, “I didn’t even notice. I don’t think anyone else is going to notice. I’ll buy it.” I haven’t noticed the damage even though I wasn’t there when he bought it. My point is, yes you are probably going to shop for the holidays. Be mindful of your desires. Don’t go too crazy buying stuff. When January rolls around you’ll get the bill and New Year’s resolution will go to crap. Because of the stress of course. Just saying, bills are stressful so don’t overbuy this season.
