Did you know that all our project/work areas must be assessed for potential heritage values and impacts prior to construction? Heritage is a term used to refer to the legacy of the past that is inherited, lived with, and passed on to future generations. There are both tangible and intangible components of heritage. It can feature objects, places, buildings, languages, practices, and traditions which have special architectural, historical, natural, scientific, and cultural significance or value. Heritage provides a link between the past, present, and future and works to preserve the identity of a place or culture. In Western Australia we typically encounter two types of heritage – Aboriginal Heritage and Historic (or European) Heritage. In our approach to heritage, Main Roads adheres to the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 and the Heritage Act 2018 respectively. We place importance on assessing the risk of any potential heritage impact early in a project’s planning stages with the aim to identify and avoid or minimise harm to heritage. Excited to share my latest article in the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage TICCIH - Official Page Bulletin (Q4 2024) exploring the transformation and contested heritage of Sydney's Darling Harbour. The piece examines how this historic maritime-industrial precinct, Australia's first centre of commerce, faced significant redevelopment pressures in the 1980s. The story of Darling Harbour serves as an important case study of how cities grapple with their industrial past and raises critical questions about urban heritage conservation in the face of economic development pressures. The full article, "Rediscovering the Forgotten: The Industrial Identity of Sydney's Darling Harbour", is attached. #IndustrialHeritage #UrbanDevelopment #Sydney #Conservation #TICCIH #UrbanHistory

Is Brisbane the best city in the world? 🌏 A read of the recent State of the City report by Brisbane Economic Development Agency makes a very compelling case on why Brisbane is positioned to lead Australia in so many ways, including: 1. It's the fastest growing Australian city over the past 10 years 2. Brisbane’s population is forecast to grow by 2.1% every year to 2046, while the South East Queensland region will reach six million over the same period – adding significant demand for new residential and commercial property 3. Brisbane City Council approves planning applications 38% faster than other cities 4. Queensland has the most new cafes and restaurants in Australia, including Australia’s top restaurant in 2023 and the world’s best coffee roaster in 2022 5. Fortitude Valley has one of the world’s highest concentrations of music venues 🎸 As a developer focused on the city, these insights provide great confidence and paint a picture of an energised Brisbane well on its way to becoming a global city. #molti #propertydevelopment #brisbaneisbest
