Moving to Saudi Arabia in 2019 was the worst choice I ever made…   At least, that's what I thought during the first week after arriving in Riyadh. This idea, initiated by a professional opportunity for my husband, became a family choice on the theme of adventure and discovery. I opted to become a teacher at the French college, as my gender did not pose an obstacle there (and because being an expatriate's wife frequenting the malls all week isn’t like me).   The issuance of my iqama took an extended period, causing me to arrive three weeks after the start of the school year. On September 25, the temperature was still 35°C in the shade and under the abaya. The school principal warmly welcomed me, handed over the keys to my classroom, and directed me to my students. A reminder to the reader: I had never taught before, nor had I undergone any teacher training. Despite preparing with the official syllabus throughout the summer, the handover was the briefest in history. Unsurprisingly, the students didn't go easy on me. Nor did the Mutawa the next day at the shopping mall when I wasn't wearing a veil (although it's no longer compulsory for foreigners). There was also the challenge of not being able to drive and circulate freely, not to mention the omnipresent dust from sandstorms and living in a compound surrounded by barbed-wire walls guarded by armed soldiers. What possessed me to come here?! Yet, if I had to make the decision again, I would undoubtedly do it! 🌟 I encountered wonderful people — students, friends, and colleagues. 🌟 Teaching and sharing my passion for technological sciences and mathematics resulted in an incredible exchange with the students, who, in turn, gave me so much more. 🌟 I discovered a country, embraced its culture, traditions, and even participated in the country's first trail in AlUla. For those hesitating about a change, here are my tips: ✅ Allow yourself some time before forming a final opinion, as the initial stages are inevitably destabilizing (in my case, it takes about three months on average). ✅ Avoid inactivity: immerse yourself in a job, association, etc. This makes it much easier to establish connections and integrate. ✅ Retain your childlike curiosity: learn, be curious, and marvel at the new.   What are your tips for a successful expatriation?

I recently traveled to Thailand, which was my first trip abroad. It was an amazing experience in many ways. The beauty of the islands surrounding the cities of Krabi and Phuket left me in awe. However, what was even more intriguing was the order that the citizens and tourists alike were following in the country. This led me to ponder why there is so much chaos in our country. Why do people find it hard to follow rules and regulations? Why is our implementation of laws so poor? Communication was a challenge for me during my entire 7-day stay since nobody there spoke English. We had to rely on hand signals and gestures to communicate most of the time. Still everything seemed to work out. This made me realise that Indian education is over-emphasising on learning English, which is visible in our daily lives and even in this very moment as you read this. As a result, our country has become a source of cheap labor for other countries due to our English-speaking skills. Although our services sector has flourished due to this reason for many years, our industrial sector is on a decline which has resulted in growth in GDP but a slow growth in per capita income of our country. This has impacted the belief systems in more ways than one. As individuals, we are resonating more with the West and are not giving enough importance to our indigenous culture. We are getting influenced at the surface level without working on the core which might be detrimental in future. It is high time that we try and understand why certain laws are in place, learn from others who are following them, and pass on the knowledge to the next generation. Every positive step we take toward this end will lead to something good someday, for sure. So, let us pledge to make a change today and work towards a better tomorrow.

It's been a week since our amazing study abroad trip concluded. I would like to share just some of the moments captured from this experience. I also want to encourage more graduate counseling programs to engage students in opportunities that will expand their culture based learning. I am more than happy to share any tips or resources if you are interested in infusing study abroad programming into your curriculum. Our study abroad journey in Bali was such a transformative experience and it was deeply rooted in the exploration of holistic wellness. Our counseling students immersed themselves in the bio-psycho-social-spiritual model of health, gaining insights from Balinese culture and traditions. Through engaging in wellness practices such as yoga, meditation, nutrition, community gardening (Jiwa), learning the language Bahasa Indonesia, and reflecting on these experiences through photovoice, students were introduced to aspects of wellness that integrate whole person healing. We also learned about the impacts of wellness tourism on Balinese culture. This immersive learning has not only enriched our understanding of holistic health from a Balinese cultural perspective, but it has also empowered us to incorporate these integrative approaches into our future counseling practices.
