Due to the high number of water deaths in North Carolina this year, it is crucial to 'Play it Safe' when visiting the ocean, a lake, or a swimming pool. Recent reports revealed nearly 200 rip current rescues at our state's beaches during the week of July 4, with a tragic incident of a teenage girl drowning at Ocean Isle Beach.
North Carolina ranks eighth highest in pool drownings since 2018, according to a Lending Tree study. It's essential to stay safe in the water this summer by educating yourself on rip currents and deep water safety. Remember, rip currents can be perilous and even the strongest swimmers can be pulled out to sea. If caught in a rip current, remain calm, swim parallel to the shoreline, and signal for help if needed.
Here are some vital tips for water safety:
- Heed Warning Flags: Red flags signal strong surf, yellow flags indicate moderate surf, and green flags suggest calm waters. Always swim near lifeguards and be cautious.
- Learn to Swim: Understand the differences between ocean and pool swimming. Use well-fitting life jackets for non-swimmers and adhere to the buddy system.
- Pool Safety: Always supervise children, avoid pool drains, and know CPR. Install proper fencing and alarms for added safety.
By taking precautions and being aware of potential dangers, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable water experience this summer. Stay informed, stay cautious, and have a great time while staying safe!

Summer barbecue season means it's time to consider the yellowjacket wasps (Vespula spp.) that may be uninvited guests. Waps at sensitive sites; such as grills, picnic tables, bathrooms, and swimming pools; can be reduced by establishing perimeters of lure traps like this one, baited with heptyl butyrate . Traps should be placed about 150' (45 m) apart and at least 200' (60 m) away from the site to be protected: https://lnkd.in/gxksz_P4.
