In another long line of challenges for the healthcare sector, just as they were recovering from the Change Healthcare breach, the recent CrowdStrike/Microsoft software update has dished out another blow. Although many healthcare providers and EMR systems were not directly impacted, the computers used by healthcare providers were. This resulted in delays in lab orders, canceled elective surgeries, disruptions in shipments, 911 call centers, pharmacies, and more. This type of outage is not the first, and it won’t be the last. It highlights the critical importance of focusing time and resources on the following activities for the future: ☑️ Business Continuity Plans: Developing and maintaining comprehensive plans to ensure operations continue during disruptions. ☑️ Live Simulations: Conducting regular simulations to test readiness and improve response strategies. ☑️ Vigilance Against Phishing: Increasing awareness of phishing emails and other potential breaches, especially during times of disruption. Staying proactive and prepared is essential to navigating these challenges and continuing to provide the critical services our communities depend on.
I agree about being proactive; it’s essential. The challenges and disruptions will continue. Time and resources are limited. Given limited resources, its’s key to prioritize and focus on who and what matters most. IT resources need to be a priority and I think it’s important to have experts available in-person.
