Session 2A – ‘Building financially sustainable HE through innovation’, chaired by Colin Castelino, IHE’s Honorary Treasurer, is looking at how innovation can secure a sustainable future for higher education. Panellists Charlotte Corrish (Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education), Jess Lister (Public First), Julie Mercer (Nous UK), and Maria Dunbar (Leiths Education) are sharing their insights into what innovation looks like under financial pressure, how institutions can proactively achieve sustainability and growth, and the risks involved. The discussion highlights what support institutions need to adapt and thrive, and we’ve heard that with the financial challenges facing the sector, doing things the way they have always been done is no longer an option. #IHE2024 #HigherEducation #Innovation #Sustainability

🙋🏿♂️Here's a burning question: Adaptation or Transformation? Your answer could lead you to powerless effort or effortless power.🤔🤔 I got a story to tell... After presenting at three incredible conferences recently—the ICLCA Conference, HBCU-FNC Conference, and AAC&U Conference—one theme keeps surfacing: colleges and universities are striving for transformation. Their commitment to thinking big and embracing change is inspiring! But here's the question: Are we achieving true transformation or simply adapting? Many efforts focus on changing the environment around students—new technologies, expanded support services, and updated resources. While these are valuable, they don’t address the most critical factor: transforming how students approach and engage with their academic work. True transformation lightens the load for faculty and staff, creates sustainable change, and empowers students to succeed in meaningful ways. Without it, we risk working harder without seeing the enduring results we hope for. Transformation starts small but soon becomes all-consuming. Yesterday Advance HE and Universities UK hosted an online workshop connecting governors, executive and Governance professionals on 'Navigating the Governance and Executive Boundary' as part of our work on Governing and Leading Transformation. We gad fantastic contributions from Association of Heads of University Administration (AHUA) and Committee of University Chairs. I've said this before and will likely say it again; one of the best things about working for a sector agency is being able to connect and facilitate conversations for shared learning between institutions and different stakeholders. A privileged position to be in. As part of the workshop Jan Juillerat expertly steered us through the current context of HE and our understanding if the boundary. We then moved in to fantastic breakout discussions looking at how we would respond to scenarios that many HEIs are facing. We concluded with an expert panel Chaired by Stephanie Harris with insightful guests Wendy Larner, Dorothy Mackenzie, and Amanda Wilcox who were able to share practises from their current and previous institutions within the UK and globally. My own key takeaway is that as universities and the wider HE sector face increasing challenges there is a need for accelerated transformation beyond continual improvement. The Governing Body needs to be heavily engaged, hold executive accountabe but also allow Exec the space to lead. Governors bring a great deal of skills and expertise which should be drawn upon, but must also know when to step back. HE must transform to become sustainable and meet needs of society. The traditional governance and executive boundary needs to become more fluid and instead guided by principles that work within each institutions own context - more a framework than a hard line. Finally, thanks to the people in the background who make these events happen. Laura Willman Shelley Ramsey Jake Truman and Nina Langlie were all vital in the success of this event.

International Education Strategy FINALLY states what I’ve been advocating for all along… 🧐 For those following recent posts on our higher ed crisis, this update marks a pivotal shift in thinking. Experts from #IHE2024 are now urging what I’ve long championed: direct government investment to reclaim the UK’s global competitiveness in education. The numbers are clear—we’ve met ambitious targets, like 600,000+ international students—but why is the government still sidelining its role as a key driver of growth? #Flashback: When we look into #researchimpact, we look at its significance. It may not be news any longer as this outcome was based on #REF2021 a few years ago. However, it becomes clear which Russell Group universities are getting a lion's share of government research funding due to their sheer #Power and #Intensity. #Power is the size of the institution producing world-leading internationally recognized research work. To create a ‘power’ score, the no. of submitted staff for an institution is multiplied by the percentage of its submission that have been rated 4* or 3*. Power gives an advantage to large universities, with more disciplines submitted (UoA). #Intensity looks at the percentage of staff producing world leading and internationally recognized research taking into account of the concentration of staff and UoA. #Marketshare is the proportion of government funding the institution is likely to receive. Well done to #Oxford, #UCL, #Cambridge, #Edinburgh, #Manchester and #KCL who secured 3% or more of the Lion's share of funding due to their #Power and #Intensity of over 3000 and 2000 submitted researchers!
