Why We Must Protect Our Freedoms on Independence Day. The 4th of July is a day to reflect, remember, celebrate and protect our freedoms. From a historical perspective, the Declaration of Independence set forth a unique ideal which has become the cornerstone value of America; enshrining our rights to Life Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness. We fought to achieve our Independence from forces without, and then from within to abolish slavery, women’s suffrage, and civil rights for all. But now we are challenged by politicians from within who seek to limit and stifle our rights to free speech by censorship and other acts. On this 248th birthday of our country, we must always reflect on the importance of our individual liberties, and fight to protect them for our future generations. #4thofjuly #independenceday #independenceday2024 #happy4thofjuly #happyfourthofjuly #freedom #freedomofspeech #freedomofpress #civilliberties #civilrights #freedomofreligion #freespeech #firstamendment #patriots #donaldtrump #maga #makeamericagreatagainagain #trumptrain #trumpsupporters #americanvalues #constitution #declarationofindependence #billofrights

#OTD Today we mark the 100th anniversary of the Snyder Act, also known as the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, which unilaterally conferred U.S. citizenship to Native peoples. It was part of the federal government's continuing attempts to cover up their responsibility to honor our treaty rights. Indigenous peoples continue to face the obstacles of systemic racism and denial of treaty rights. Today, state governments still change poll times and locations without notice to Tribal governments. In recent years, judges at all levels of government have weakened the Voting Rights Act and state lawmakers continue to pass new unconstitutional laws to make it harder for Native people to vote. For this centennial, we’ve joined with partner organizations IllumiNative and the Native American Rights Fund to declare a National Day of Action and Reflection. The centennial offers a unique opportunity to raise awareness and foster a collective narrative about this pivotal moment in U.S. history for Native peoples. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ggUwv-9D

The Four Freedoms | Freedom for Virtue Political freedom relies on the virtue and morality of citizens, as emphasized by historical figures like Livy, Jefferson, and Mill. True freedom involves self-mastery and the pursuit of virtues such as family fidelity, self-control, humility, and toleration. These virtues reduce the need for external governance, support strong communities, and preserve a truly free and flourishing society. https://lnkd.in/gmbXHN9t

Dr. Audra Simpson, a brilliant Mohawk scholar, tackles critical issues of Indigenous sovereignty and settler colonialism in her work. Her book "Mohawk Interruptus" explores the complexities of land rights and resistance movements. By following her work and engaging with Indigenous voices, we can all become better allies in the fight for justice. Check out Dr. Simpson's book "Mohawk Interruptus" and share your learnings or recommendations for further reading in the comments! #IndigenousRights #SettlerColonialism #LandBack

Today, we pause to reflect on Juneteenth – also known as Freedom Day and Emancipation Day. It marks a cornerstone in American history: the abolition of slavery and the long-awaited enforcement of emancipation in the last Confederate state. #Juneteenth #weservetennesseans

FREEDOM We all love our freedoms and love to live in countries that promote and cherish freedom. Today, I was tested by a high school student who asked me: ”What do presidents, prime ministers, and politicians mean by freedom?” I could not come up with a single simple answer, so started to go through a list. The student wrote them all down and then asked me: ”Would you give up some or all your freedoms for the rest of your life if in return all famine and poverty in the world were made to disappear?” I answered “yes”. Does each of our freedoms have a price? What are the top 5 freedoms in your view?
