Returning to work after the loss of a loved one is never easy. After the unexpected passing of my wonderful mother-in-law, I found myself navigating through a whirlwind of emotions – feeling helpless, anxious, sad, frustrated, and sorrowful. But amidst the darkness, came an outpouring of support from friends, family, and colleagues. Small social gatherings, sharing memories, and the kindness of others helped ease the pain, but returning to the routine of work was daunting. On my first day back, my battery was less than fifty percent. It was tough, especially as I had to deliver a presentation on service excellence and personal well-being to new employees. I briefly thought about asking someone else to do this presentation on my behalf. But I made a choice – I chose to be honest. I chose to show vulnerability. I chose to share with these new colleagues that it's okay not to be okay. Because life happens, and sometimes our batteries aren't fully charged. As leaders in the healthcare industry, it's essential to lead by example, to show that sometimes, life happens and it's okay to be human, to have struggles, and to prioritize your mental health and well-being. Let's create a culture where everyone's mental health is known and valued. Let's embrace the concept that it's okay to not be okay.
