Both the #FilmIndustry and the #Cinema Industries are changing / evolving, not necessarily for the better, although MovieHouse seats today certainly tend to be better, more comfortable and cleaner. Once and for 3 decades "a Big Movie-Goer," perhaps more than 50/yr 1st run movies, for the last 2 decades it's shrunk to perhaps 3-5/yr 1st run movies, e.g., so far this year, just 1 movie (TRAP: https://lnkd.in/eBmYXdDH) ). Both the #Woke Film Industry and the deemphasis on #Acting / #StoryTelling in Favor of #SciFi #SpecialEffects has made its Work Product of diminished interest. You can't help how your customers will feel about any given movie, but you CAN affect how amazing an experience they have in your venue. After almost eight years working in hospitality, and three decades being an AVID cinemagoer, one of the biggest areas I see where cinemas could learn from the hospitality sector is in "welcome excellence" and the "culture of service". This article asks an interesting question and maybe it is a glass-half-full situation. Yes, exhibitors leaning on landlords to lower rents is part of the explanation - as WSJ recently pointed out, it is hard to re-purpose cinemas into anything else. But my suspicion is that lowering seating numbers with the introduction of recliners, doubling down on premium and introducing wider location-based entertainment options (climbing walls!) also has something to do with this. No doubt this and more being discussed at CinemaCon https://lnkd.in/e2yCEMpX

Alamo Drafthouse was a leader in the movie theater evolution. With pre-show entertainment, full menus, themed cocktails, and waiters — Alamo was a cinema lover’s dream. They bought Mondo, a design team known for high quality fan-centric art. But pandemic related closures forced Alamo into Chapter 11. Alamo is officially past their bankruptcy days and is now opening and reopening theaters. They are selling Mondo to Funko, probably for cost saving reasons. Is Alamo the future of cinema still? Will moviehouses get smaller and be more premium? For now, I think they’ll both exist simultaneously. Red, Amber, Green: “The current marketplace is broken and needs to be re-aligned - this is not a single company issue. Today #cinema faces highly significant challenges and will have to manage through the turbulence and turmoil that will ensue over the next 24 months in Hollywood dominated markets. There are remedies and solutions amongst studios, investors, credible institutional shareholders (not memes), landlords, bondholders inc. #debtforequity, suppliers and management; as well as government to ensure that when the market place recovers there is the ability to screen the large number of premium event-driven theatrical first films in production . It’s not out of home (cinema) v at home (streaming) as they are complimentary and perhaps they may become more aligned. It is about #experience. The cinema anchor closing has two major impacts - landlords and investors for rent and the contagion impact that complimentary casual dining restaurants under-trade, close and likewise don’t pay rent. That impacts all of us as pension and annuity funds as well as local authorities are the big investor-owners of leisure property. Cinemas need to be actively managed as an asset by the operator and aligned to the development interest.
