3 Ways to Avoid Summer Learning Loss Summer break brings days of seemingly endless sunshine and plenty of fun, but it can chip away at academic progress. One study found that over the summer, students may lose as much as 25–30% of the progress made during the school year. Here are three ways to make sure the learning your child has worked so hard to achieve doesn’t atrophy: 1. Take part in a summer reading program. Reading is a foundational skill that supports all other areas of academic achievement. Even better, books open up a world of adventure that allows children's curiosity to soar. Take part in the reading program with your child to model positive habits for them. 2. Let your child lead. Over the school year, the course of study is largely predetermined. Allow your child to delve into their areas of interest over the summer. From state fairs to space camp, there are many ways to engage your child’s strengths. 3. Enjoy moments of discovery. Mental exercise over the summer doesn’t need to be a full-time program with a peer-reviewed curriculum. Build pockets of learning into your ordinary activities. When on a family hike, use an app like Merlin to identify the birdsong you hear. Pause over your milk and cookies to watch a YouTube video explaining pasteurization. The possibilities are endless and can be effortless. One final encouragement: Summer is a wonderful time for a change of pace. Even while you integrate academic enrichment into your summer, it’s also key that you demonstrate the value of rest and rejuvenation for your child.

Who would have thought that summer camp could do what a traditional classroom can do? Understanding the impact of summer camp on academic performance can be a game changer. Summer camp is a memorable childhood experience for many, filled with adventure, fun and laughter. But it doesn’t just end there. According to research, the impact of summer camp extends beyond playing, telling stories, and enjoying roasted marshmallows by the fire. Summer camp is an important setting that promotes exploration and reinforces classroom learning. Just like school, you don’t need to know how to do stuff before going to summer camp. That’s why you are going - to explore and learn. My siblings and I looked forward to summer camps. One of the things that I remember about summer camp was finally understanding (not learning) how to write a story. It felt so easy. Maybe it was the environment that brought to life the writing concepts taught in the classroom. It didn't cross my mind that one day I would write and publish a book, but it happened. Check out my children’s books https://lnkd.in/eRwHAK2K Many camps offer specialized programs that provide academic enrichment from science to writing camps. So, when thinking about sending your children to summer camp, remember there are a variety of them out there. Only take the time to find the one that meets your family’s needs. Here are three things to think about when planning on choosing summer camp for your kids. Slide 1: Start early with the search: Spaces are limited and getting a spot is on a first come basis. Slide 2: What do you want your kid to get from the summer camp? Slide 3: How to prepare for camp ***If you have questions about finding and deciding on a summer camp for your kids, feel free to get in touch and I’ll be more than happy to help you out. —----------------------- What are your childhood memories about summer camp? The new 2024-25 Academic Year is just around the corner. Students are enjoying their last few days of summer vacation while attending county state fairs, backyard bonfires and beautiful lake days. As an admissions counselor, I can feel both the excitement but also the nerves of coming back to school. To help ease those “back-to-school-jitters”, here are a few tips: 1. Take a deep breath. This is a big and exciting step. This is the starting point to help accomplish your academic, professional and even personal goals. Give yourself a pat on the back for taking this step. 2. Utilize your resources. Online students can come across the challenge of receiving the same assistance as traditional, on-campus students when it comes to resources. Luckily, Concordia’s Academic Resource Center (ARC) offers many resources for our online students such as our online tutor feature. 3. Organize and manage your schedule. While you gather your materials, be sure to set time aside to organize your weekly schedule as this can bring you great success. Designate time, either in the morning or evening, to work on your school work. Having an established study time will help you to maintain focus and completion of assignments. 4. Connect with your supporters. As I said prior, coming back to school is a huge step. It is important to have a supportive community around you to help you run the race hard and strong. Find your cheerleaders that will lift your spirits in times of doubt and celebrate in times of accomplishment! 5. Take breaks. One of the most important tips. It is essential that students take 10–15 minute breaks every hour or two while studying. Walking away will allow the brain to rest and even have a time to process new and creative ideas. These are just a few back-to-school tips that I have found personally helpful as an online student. Not everyone can be an online student and fully employed at the same time but yet – here you are! Continue to have the motivation and determination to achieve your degree so you can reach your personal and professional goals. Cheers to the 2024-2025 school year! #LiveUncommon #CUW #CUAA #NewSchoolYear #CollegeExperience #Encouragement #BacktoSchool #ReturningCollegeStudent #NewCollegeStudent

As summer approaches, many of us eagerly anticipate a break from the school year's demands. While it's crucial for children to unwind and recharge, this season also offers a prime opportunity to keep them engaged in learning! The benefits of this approach extend far beyond merely avoiding the well-documented "summer slide." Research supports the idea that continuous learning during the summer can significantly benefit students. According to the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA), children can experience significant academic setbacks over the summer, with declines of up to two months in math and reading skills! This decline can create a challenging gap for students to overcome when the new school year begins. However, summer learning doesn't have to be a chore. Integrating educational activities into the summer months can be both enjoyable and enriching. By seamlessly blending learning with leisure, activities such as reading, educational games, science experiments, and nature exploration can make the learning process enjoyable for children. Studies have shown that maintaining intellectual engagement during the summer can have long-lasting effects. According to the RAND Corporation, high-quality summer learning programs can help mitigate learning loss and improve educational outcomes for all students. These programs not only help students maintain their academic skills but also foster a genuine love for learning! The benefits of summer learning extend beyond academic achievement. A study published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence found that students who participate in summer learning programs experience positive effects on their social and emotional development. These programs can help students build confidence, develop social skills, and enhance their overall well-being. Furthermore, summer learning can help bridge the gap between different socioeconomic backgrounds. Research from the Brookings Institution shows that students from low-income families are particularly at risk for learning loss over the summer. Engaging these students in summer learning programs can help level the playing field and ensure that all children have access to quality education. Encouraging continuous learning during the summer months is an investment in their future, cultivating a mindset that values education and sparks lifelong curiosity!
