Whether you like it or not, 2024 is a presidential election year! Faith-based nonprofits and their employees, directors, officers, and volunteers often care deeply about political affairs. And for good reason. The political candidates we elect and the laws our governments enact seriously impact religious liberty, the work of faith-based nonprofits, and many issues central to preserving our civic life. But there is a well-known tension: faith-based nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status are limited in their ability to advocate for political issues and candidates. Here it is. The #1 mistake I see advocacy organizations make on a regular basis. ➡️ Failing to claim victory! Often, leaders and communicators are so understandably exhausted after they win a legislative battle, pass a ballot measure, win in court, meet a milestone, or dominate an election that they take a break and immediately gear up for the next fight. They forget that it's VITAL to publicly reflect on the good work your team and supporters have done so far! When your goal is large-scale, world-bettering systemic change, there are going to be setbacks. That's why it's crucial to celebrate, express gratitude, and claim victory at every opportunity. 🔥 THIS is how you continuously demonstrate your value to donors and supporters. 🔥 THIS is how you keep hope alive when things get hard. If you want to build a resilient movement, celebrate, express gratitude, and claim victory loudly and publicly as often as you possibly can.

In the aftermath of this tragic event, as we mourn the loss of Rebecca Contois, Marcedes Myran, Morgan Harris, and Buffalo Woman, we cannot ignore the urgent need to establish pathways towards security and safety for Indigenous women and girls. Their lives were unjustly taken away, leaving a void that can never be filled. It is our shared responsibility to ensure that such horrific acts no longer haunt our communities. Let this verdict serve as a catalyst for change, a powerful reminder that justice alone is insufficient. We must tirelessly address the deep-rooted issues that perpetuate violence against Indigenous women and girls, dismantling the very structures that have allowed this injustice to persist. Together, let us forge new paths, guided by empathy and respect, as we strive to create a society where every Indigenous woman and girl can walk freely without fear. Let us amplify their voices, honor their stories, and advocate fiercely for their rights. In this endeavor, we must also acknowledge the profound trauma and heartbreak endured by the children left behind. We must support and nurture them, ensuring that they receive the care and healing they deserve. Their pain should serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for change. Together, we can build a future where security and safety are not distant dreams, but inherent rights for all. May the lives lost continue to inspire us to stand united and determined, as we work tirelessly to create a world where no more Indigenous women or girls fall victim to violence.
