I'm not going to sugar coat this... being a legal consultant is hard 😑 but do you know what else is hard? 🤔 being a solicitor in a tradtional law firm 😱 choose your hard As a legal consultant my worries are:- Where is my next client coming from? What will my tax bill be? Will there be Wifi in the resort? 🌴😂 (joking not joking) As an employed solicitor my worries were:- Is there enough work coming in and can I generate more? Am I being allocated work fairly? Have I recorded enough time? Will I hit my target this month? Am I in favour with the big bosses/does my face still fit? Am I meeting expectations for business development? How can I dress to impress/what to wear every day? How can I convince the firm I deserve a pay rise? Am I on partner track? What's the market like for NZ Lawyers?   𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐞:   Recent salary hikes for newly qualified (NQ) lawyers at Magic Circle firms have widened the salary gap between New Zealand and the UK. In London, NQ lawyers are now on salaries of £150,000 (NZD $314,000!!!).   In Australia, the salary environment remains highly competitive. I've assisted Kiwi lawyers in negotiating up to 100K salary packages increases from their top tier firms in NZ (!!!). Lawyers with 2 years of PAE earn upwards of AUD $140,000 (NZD $150,000+) at leading Sydney firms.   𝐇𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬:   Finance, especially leveraged finance, continues to be a sought-after skill set. We’re continuing to see a rise in opportunities from Magic Circle, Silver Circle, US, and top-tier Australian and London firms for NZ lawyers from the 2 year level.   Real estate law in Australia has been particularly active. Although it's historically been challenging to transition internationally into this practice area, I've successfully placed several NZ lawyers with top Sydney firms, resulting in upwards of 60% salary increases.   The corporate sector is experiencing a rebound. While 2023 was quieter, M&A and PE roles have been on the rise this year (particularly in Australia, with positive signs in London). While positions are still largely geared towards 4-7 year PAE lawyers, we are seeing more interest to consider those at the 2/3 year level in Australia and internationally.   Litigation is becoming a busy area in Australia. I'm currently working with several band 1 litigation teams on commercial litigation, financial disputes, arbitration, and regulatory disputes roles, ideally targeting those with 3-5 years PAE, but still seeing decent interest for those at the 2 year level.   𝐏𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:   London continues to be a key destination for NZ lawyers, especially off the back of a European holiday…   Ireland is still a popular market for Kiwi lawyers, where they can still keep strong accessibility to European holidaying. We are seeing strategic hiring for corporate, finance and litigation lawyers from the 3 year NZ PAE level.   The first days of spring (30-degree days giving strong summer vibes) in Australia show positive growth as we charge through the financial year. Recently we've sat down with our key top tier and international firm clients to discuss additional resourcing they need in key practice areas- teams are getting increasingly busy.   NZ returning lawyers. This year has been the busiest year I've seen since COVID-19 for NZ lawyers returning from London, Ireland and even the US to join Australian firms. Their reasons? Lifestyle (better weather usually), close proximity to NZ, and career prospects/earning potential.

I sense I may not be able to secure any more of these sorts of temporary contracts, as they are increasingly becoming positions people go to college to specialize in, and they are cornering the market on them as ends in themselves. My last full time job was as a junior compliance officer with Industry Canada. Before that I worked as a financial advisor with Edward Jones. Before that I was an articling student. I had left Ontario lawyer licensing because of the sort of career opportunities that were available to me at the trajectory I had been placed into. I have since been networking with law firms in the UK which I hope could rectify this problem, if I were to get an offer. So this could be an opportunity brewing to go bigger. I do not plan on voluntarily opting into specializing in admin work as a long term option. I couldn't afford to, even if I wanted to. I will remain open to work options that are available though, because in the absence of something better, something is usually better than nothing. I am open to a vacation scheme as a means to a training contract, and am open to continuing to avail myself of networking opportunities that may arise. I am resigning myself to the possibility of a career doing something other than practicing law, but I am not going to close any doors in the absence of having any opened. There are a number of non-practicing options that could work, such as consulting, compliance and management. I have in recent months had some interviews in areas such as these, mostly in the Toronto area. If the job is somewhat interesting, and the job security and income level is reasonable, given the challenges of living costs, I am open to a pivot. I am making all efforts and keeping all options on the table. I will take what comes and make any necessary adjustments, as the circumstances necessitate. But I am not the one who decides. The employer decides. I can't make plans based on hypotheticals, I can only make plans based on facts. Without a job offer, I lack the substance to make any plans or to act in any pre-emptive way.
