"Failures of an anatomic arthroplasty that occur less than ten years after the arthroplasty is probably […] a poor decision or a poor execution of the surgery". Planning for shoulder arthroplasty has changed in the past few years, and the WTIO Symposium from Hospital for Special Surgery explains. #OrthoMedia #Orthopedics #ShoulderArthroplasty https://lnkd.in/eNS737K6

Anterior lumbar decompression surgery is a surgical technique used to fuse the adjacent vertebrae from the spines front. The fusion surgery involves removing the disc material and inserting a bone graft and a cage (implant) to join the vertebrae naturally. The anterior lumbar interbody fusion may be used alone or in conjunction with the posterior approach to provide more stability. Robotic hip replacement surgery is a surgery that is performed to replace a patients hip, after suffering from arthritis or anther condition which has led to a degenerative joint disease within their hip. The surgery itself is performed by a surgeon with the assistance of a robot with a built in computer system that allows for more precise calculations of where bony cuts need to be made in order to remove the arthritis fully from the patients hip. Why is it important to perform a hip-spine analysis for every THA patient? A study by Jonathan Vigdorchik showed that 81% of THA patients who presented with a stiff spine did not have a prior spinal fusion surgery. Uphill Battle But Never Give Up Lives depend on it I will be the first to acknowledge Fluoroscopy control of THA cup position Is an Awesome Technology Be it overlays or in conjunction with a navigation software, It’s intuitive, fairly precise, and reproducible. Once proficient, who would ever want to change? It’s a tough question. But radiation exposure is the biggest health risk I know of in Orthopaedics And significantly higher for Women Doctors, Nurses, PAs, reps It causes Cancer Women orthopedists have a 4X higher risk of breast cancer than age matched controls 4X That’s a horrible statistic We now celebrate women in our field, gown them up and send them into surgical theaters to get radiated. In trauma, hand, foot and ankle, shoulder, spine, arthroplasty, peds, oncology, sports All the time. Let’s buy our residents their own gowns and make them bigger- more protective. While everyone else in the room grabs whatever betadine stained, worn, crappy gown off a rack shared with covering crotches in the cysto rooms or wherever. It’s been mind boggling for me, I’ve brought the issue up before. Ortho women seem to accept the risk, don’t complain, and protect themselves. So we get all worried about skin cancer from UV rays OMG, where’s the SPF 50? But when our recent rep hire, fresh out off college Gets her breast resected, radiated, and chemo saves her life, And this is swept under the rug. I will continue to bring this risk Invisible Painless Insidious To light. Because, like cigarettes and lung cancer, football and chronic traumatic encephalopathy We must address the root cause Ionizing Radiation To save lives. I’m not sure how best to separate Orthopedic Surgery And Fluoroscopy But logically it is to use other technologies To minimize And replace it entirely How does gender equality deal with a profession that’s more dangerous than to men? Coal miners and black lung Asbestos workers Female Orthopedic surgeons I’m all in for any replacement for radiation in orthopedics So I support NaviSwiss in raising the Issue It’s Inclusive Concern For our own So I can’t stop Until The Word “SHOT” The Other American Tragedy Not Being Addressed Stays Relegated to Only Place In Medicine It should be encountered The ER Overthinking Overreacting Good That’s what it takes sometimes #followthebod #bodsquad #medtech #womeninorthopedics #breastcancer #residencymatch #orthopedicsurgery
Utilizing navigational surgery in total hip arthroplasty (THA) reduces fluoroscopy exposure for the patient, promoting a safer and more patient-friendly surgical environment. Hip replacement surgery is considered one of the most successful operations in modern medicine. The surgery relieves the pain and stiffness caused by various affections of the hip joint promising patients a lifestyle they enjoyed before the disease. Traditionally the surgery has been usually performed from the back (posterior approach) and side (lateral) of the hip. Recently, surgeons have been performing surgeries from the front known as the anterior approach. The anterior approach offers a faster recovery rate and less postoperative pain.
