At The Buckeye Ranch, we work to be responsive to real-time needs in our community. Our Somali Outreach Program was born a few years ago when our Education-Based Mental Health team noticed the community need to provide our growing population of Somali youth and families in our community with culturally sensitive support. The program offers access to Somali-speaking case managers to provide support for navigating loss, trauma, and resettlement, as well as issues common to the process of merging cultures. Our Somali Outreach Program connects Somali families to community resources, provides acculturation services to the Somali community in Franklin County, and connects youth and families and service providers that provide culturally sensitive care to Somali clients and patients! We remember and honor the Indigenous peoples of Canada, not just on this Truth and Reconciliation Day but every day. This occasion calls us to reflect on the painful history of Indigenous trauma and to take meaningful actions toward healing and understanding. Let’s dedicate ourselves to listening, learning, and standing in solidarity with Indigenous communities. The intergenerational trauma stemming from colonization and residential schools continues to impact Indigenous lives today. We must confront this painful reality and work collectively toward reconciliation. This day serves not only as a moment of reflection but also as a commitment to sustained action. Education, support, and advocacy are essential for creating a brighter future for all. #MentalHealthCare is essential. The project Safeguarding the Rights of Populations at Risk of Ill Mental Health in Guyana is leading the way in ensuring that local communities get the support they deserve. Gatekeepers - local health care workers, civil society leaders and religious figures - are trained to identify mental health issues, provide immediate support, and connect people with the services they need. Shanna, a dedicated gatekeeper from the Mabaruma region, recalls the transformative experience and insight she gained into #SuicidePrevention: “It gave me a better view on suicide...being here helped me understand suicide fully and ways and (sic) how we can combat it,” she explains. “Suicide has never occurred in my community, and I want to go back and educate and teach them so that it would never occur in my community.” Empowered by her new-found knowledge, Shanna has become a vital resource and mental health advocate in her community. She says, “I plan to educate [my community] on what I have learned here today and start implementing small strategies so that [suicide] can never happen. They can be well educated and aware like I am today.” Together, IDRF (International Development and Relief Foundation) and Canada continue to support mental health care in Guyana by building local capacity and engaging community members. As a result, the project has successfully trained over 700 community members like Shanna. Together, we can fight stigma and prioritize mental health for all! 📸 Anand Ally / IDRF #CommunityCare | #GenderEquality | #MentalHealth | #MentalHealthNow | #MentalHealthForAll | #MentalHealthAwareness | #WorldMentalHealthDay

While violence and intergenerational trauma are realities of our world, nurturing a loving space for our children’s emotions can help them learn that compassion is, too. “Trauma tries to convince us that compassion, community, and humanity aren’t possible,” writes psychiatrist Paul Conti in his book, Trauma: The Invisible Epidemic. As parents, we can show our children not only how to imagine these possibilities but to also act to make them achievable. https://lnkd.in/gRgu55mY

🇺🇦🚨 The escalation of the conflict in Ukraine has led to millions of children and families requiring psychosocial support. This highlights the critical importance of delivering effective mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) interventions early in humanitarian emergencies to mitigate long-term suffering from mental health issues. 🫶👥The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has introduced Psychological First Aid as a potential solution to assist the vast number of people fleeing from Ukraine. Given the scarcity of psychologists, those trained in Psychological First Aid can offer essential support to prevent the deterioration of children's mental health, thereby reducing the need for additional professional assistance. 🧡 “Through this project, we are continuously creating the awareness to all that it is okay to take a break and prioritize your emotional, psychological, and social well-being especially in stressful situations,” shared Basilio Muiruri, the Project Coordinator of Health and Care at IFRC Europe. 🔗 Read our articles on ChildHub on the importance of Psychosocial First Aid: https://ow.ly/Or1u50Rzm4I https://ow.ly/6Kwh50Rzm4J #EU4Health #IFRC #PsychosocialFirstAid #PFA
