First things first….. As of October of last year, I officially ended a nearly 12-year run working for what started as Oskar Blues Brewery, then became CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective, and ultimately ended up as Monster Brewing Company. It was an incredible adventure and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help build a great business, lead a passionate team of beverage professionals, and forge strong partnerships through the ups and downs (mostly ups) of ownership changes and an ever-evolving industry. While I am proud to have been part of driving meaningful growth and building some amazing brands, what I value most from the past 12 years are the strong bonds and friendships forged with teammates and partners as we tackled challenges and had much fun doing it. In full transparency, the timing of this change was not exactly to my choosing, as it also coincided with Hurricane Helene coming through and wreaking havoc on my home and hometown in Asheville, NC. However, I can confidently say that it was the right move for me, both personally and professionally. I’ve been very fortunate to have had the chance to pause, reflect on what matters most to me and my family at this stage of life and career, and plan the path forward. After much deliberation and productive conversations with amazing friends inside and outside the industry over the past few months, I founded Ascend Beverage Solutions. Ascend offers strategic advisory services to beverage leaders and companies seeking solutions that drive value and growth in an ever-changing, challenging market. With over 25 years of experience across all facets of the three tiers of the industry, the business is uniquely positioned to help companies of all sizes and at all stages of growth become smarter, more agile, and ultimately more effective in their approach. Our CEO, Joanne Newborn just returned from Portugal, taking a tour of the Douro Valley and visiting a few incredible wineries. The messaging was the same, as I’ve heard from other countries, “We have too much wine, because people aren’t buying and drinking as much.” In fact, although 2024 was an incredible year for the grapes, many vineyards were deciding not to harvest all of them, and just let them die on the vine.  It is heartbreaking for someone who spent decades in the Wine & Spirits business. Why is this important? While the story is sad, it isn’t going to help to sell more. Yet data will help tell stories that are “win” for on & off premise accounts, and knowing HOW to use the data and WHAT to do with it, is what makes data so powerful.
