“Those who stand to lose are the future generations; their future is uncertain, reliant upon the decision-making of a handful of large-emitting states which are responsible for climate change. These states have not only enabled but proactively encouraged the production and consumption of fossil fuels and continue to do so today,” said PISFCC President, Cynthia Houniuhi. Vishal Prasad, PISFCC Campaign Director: “We are preparing for an unprecedented moment as the World Court prepares to hear from countries on their obligations to address climate change. This is a moment where we are looking to ensure that states bring the progressive arguments that are centered on human rights, Indigenous People’s rights, intergenerational justice, the lived realities of frontline communities, and on the need for urgent climate justice. With these submissions, we can build a basis for a strong, robust opinion that can help unlock climate action and help us urgently course-correct.” Shiva Gounden, Head of Pacific at Greenpeace Australia Pacific: “What started in the Pacific is now a historic climate justice campaign, as the world’s most urgent problem of climate change reaches the world’s highest court. The next two weeks of hearings are the culmination of years of collective campaigning, powerful advocacy, and mobilizing the world behind this landmark campaign to ensure the human rights of current and future generations are protected from climate destruction and the biggest emitters are held accountable. Coming together in The Hague, we have the opportunity to present before the Court the testimonies and resistance of frontline communities and elevate their demands for radical action and justice. The ICJ judges have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change the course of history; we urge them to make this moment count.” Jule Schnakenberg, Interim Executive Officer, World's Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ): “It was the power of young people and civil society organizations from the Pacific and across the World who initiated and fuelled these historic climate justice proceedings. While standing on the shoulders of giants who have come before us, it is people power that was instrumental in pushing for more climate action inside and outside of courtrooms. With international diplomatic processes like the UNFCCC COPs not delivering fast and fair enough, the global community is turning to the World Court to break the deadlock on climate justice. We have been working with legal teams across the world to push for progressive arguments regarding intergenerational equity, the rights of future generations, and climate justice principles. And now, finally, the communities who powered this campaign on a national and regional level get their days in court. As a youth movement, we stand ready to make sure that these hearings reach the communities most affected by the climate crisis, so that it can become a collective tool for more ambition, equity, and action.”

Conservation Voters New Mexico & CVNM Education Fund, with support from partners across the advocacy community, just released a report on the ongoing impacts of climate change on New Mexico communities. The report, titled “The State of Climate Action in New Mexico: A Call to Action,” chronicles the major policy starts – and stalls – of the last three gubernatorial administrations, showcasing the work that still needs to be done in order to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis and build a renewable energy economy that works for all New Mexicans. Read the full report, find climate action resources for New Mexico families, businesses, and leaders, and explore policy recommendations at ClimateActionNowNM.org.

It is high time that the raging debates around #carbonmarkets in the Global North stop drowning out the voices of Indigenous Peoples, Local Communities and Afro-descendents (IPLCs and ADs). We must honor the self determination of those in the Global South and listen without bias to the climate solutions they want. This blog compiles the many and growing Global South IPLC and AD groups that are advocating for their inclusion in designing carbon markets, detailing how their increased participation will strengthen equity in climate finance and forest conservation efforts. This is a living document and will grow as more organizations come forward. Please leave a comment if we missed any organizations or key articles of support. https://lnkd.in/g8GFauQ9

Based on our engagement in the region, we estimate that the equivalent of several full-time employees’ (FTEs) worth of time over a year was spent on applying for the CPRG implementation grants, which translates to several hundreds of thousands of dollars of state and local funds. However, the current grants process disproportionately burdens these communities that are doubly penalized when they do not receive the funding, especially after having spent a substantial amount of time and resources on applying. To lower the barriers to entry, the grantmaking process needs to incorporate some changes. Read on for recommendations based on analysis and engagement in the region: https://lnkd.in/gQmHB5aM
As we contemplate what comes next for federal climate funding, we know we have at least a $4.6 billion funding gap in the Midwest left just from unfunded CPRG (Climate Pollution Reduction Grant) projects - not to mention the unselected Energy Future Grants, Community Change Grants, and many more. So much work has gone into these project proposals and competitive grants are not the only way to get them done. We want to help broker the relationships that will deliver a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient Midwest region! Check out the link below. https://lnkd.in/gQmHB5aM

Action Inertia = an action/activity at rest tends to stay at rest, and an action/activity in motion tends to stay in motion, unless acted on by a net external force. Let’s keep up the push to enact solutions keeping pace of climate work across the Midwest.

🌿 Nature (us 🐒 included) at the core of climate targets. Even if we stay below 2°C (is 1.5°C already an illusion?), mass extinction, pollution, and hunger will still threaten vulnerable communities, especially in the Global South. Yet, most climate funding focuses on carbon, ignoring the urgent need for resilience, adaptation, and nature restoration in regions like Latin America and the Caribbean. Below is a guide on how to include nature in the NDCs. cc Gonzalo Muñoz Abogabir CMG Julio Cordano Jenny Mager Santos

How often can you recall a conference talk years later? I clearly remember the presentation shared by Renee Lertzman, PhD at the Alberta Ecotrust Foundation Environmental Gathering eight years ago. This isn't a testament to my memory but to the relevance of her talk and its implications for #climateaction. You have a chance to hear Dr. Lertzman on Tues, Nov. 12 through her #UCalgaryClimateConversations webinar. Humanities survival depends on the 4R’s pathway to support carbon reduction, but we need to increase action tenfold and marginalise the fossil fuel industry that continues to lobby and receive billions in subsidies
