Do you work for or know a Community Organisation? Do you/they want funding for environmental and climate-related projects? Are you/they based in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland? Then we've got something for you..... We're making up to £500,000 available to community organisations for environmental and climate-related activities across Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. The announcement follows the launch of our Vital Signs North East 2024 report on the environment that highlights how local environmental action can make a real difference powered by local #philanthropy. The report, outlines three major challenges we face: 1. climate change: the rise in global temperatures, resulting in more extreme weather events and putting pressure on critical systems such as agriculture 2. declining biodiversity: damage to ecosystems upon which we depend for food, clean air, materials and medicines 3. immediate everyday issues: air and water pollution, litter and waste management and access to green spaces The report also points to what can be funded locally to make a difference and this is what this funding is focused on. Projects that tackle issues directly in communities, as well as projects that help raise awareness and encourage action, will be considered for funding. Re-wilding programmes, recycling and repurposing projects, raising awareness in communities, and improving the energy efficiency of a building are examples of activities that would be considered. Rob Williamson, CEO of the Community Foundation, said: “While environmental issues can often feel overwhelming, we firmly believe that local action can make a difference. In addition, we are fortunate to have many very special natural assets in the North East that are worth protecting. We also know that a number of our donors are eager to fund projects that can help tackle the environmental challenges we face. That’s why we’re able to allocate up to £500,000 for such projects this year. Having the Vital Signs research behind this effort will help ensure we direct resources to the areas with the greatest potential for impact.” Links to the report and the fund in the comments below #PoweredByPhilanthropy #WhatCommunityFoundationsDo Image: Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland team and partners planting native trees at National Trust Gibside to celebrate the Local Environment Action Fund (LEAF) at the Community foundation

Climate psychologist researching effective communication & mental health │ Educator, consultant & public speaker │ Campaigner for a fossil-free future │ Content creator documenting environmental projects around Europe
🌍 In need of a mid-week good news boost? Here’s your weekly dose of climate optimism, featuring some epic legal cases led by Indigenous communities, a crackdown on single-use plastic in Europe, and hopeful news for wildlife. Some of you always wonder why I include ongoing stories, like the potential fast fashion advertising ban in France or the Māori court case in New Zealand. The simple reason is that many people are unaware of these things happening, and raising awareness is the first step in creating political pressure for these changes to be pushed through. So if you’re in France or NZ and these stories resonated with you, do consider joining a campaign to make sure these initiatives result in a success story! Have a great week! 🌿Dr. Jane Goodall🌿always says: "We are all interconnected, people, animals, our environment.” This is a sentiment that always sticks with me, but especially on #EarthDay today. I think back on a community cleanup I participated in while visiting the Republic of Congo. The event was organized by a local school and its Roots & Shoots members, which is The Jane Goodall Institute’s youth empowerment 💪program. The project organizers were wonderful, and the club had successfully cleaned up plastic waste from the local beach. But then it was time for the next part: Properly sorting/ disposing / recycling the plastics and the trash. The project leaders still were not sure what to do with it, but they did not let that stop them from taking that first step. 🌍 To some, this may sound frustrating. But to me, it is a story of hope for our planet, of action instead of apathy, and a reminder of ✨the importance of constantly seeking connection. ✨ Do you have a connection who can help our Roots & Shoots members, in the Republic of the Congo or elsewhere, seamlessly dispose of the plastics they collect during community cleanups? Do you know of a strong partner that will help us reach more young people eager to make a positive impact on their community, who we can support through Roots & Shoots? Let me know in the comments! Jane is right: 🌱We are all interconnected. 🌱 How can you be the connective tissue that keeps a project — and our planet — going… on #EarthDay and every day?

It's Compost Awareness Week! In 2023, DEN collected 265 tons of food waste to be turned into compost. That equates to 173 metric tons of C02e avoided! And that's not all - some of the finished compost is then used to reseed our newly constructed community solar gardens! This is just one of the many steps DEN is taking to become one of the greenest airports in the world. Learn more about DEN's planet-positive actions at https://lnkd.in/gUYUUbjb
