Very interesting article. Definitely highlighting our challenges as PTs.

The animus and derision that exists between some academic and non-academic physical therapists is quite frankly one of the most idiotic things in our profession. As is this completely fabricated notion that these two settings are so fundamentally divergent from each other. This literally serves no good and only weakens the profession. It’s also not reality. Most physical therapy faculty members transitioned to academia after years spent in clinical practice. Do people think they just forgot about the clinical side or have no concern for the sustainability of the profession? Many still practice. Why disparage people for having different interests or changing them at different points of their career? I think it’s great that our profession has so many options for people to pursue that match their interests and as their career evolves. Whether you are a clinician, administrator, practice owner, educator, researcher, advocate, etc., you are a member of the profession. Each physical therapist cares deeply about the profession and is concerned about its sustainability. I wish more would be more involved with our professional organizations and advocacy but that’s up to the individual. However, we’re all ultimately on the same team. It’s about time we start acting like it. When it comes to fighting the real challenges to the profession (payment and scope of practice) we need everyone on board. If the profession no longer remains sustainable, everyone will be out of the job they love and sacrificed so much for. #physicaltherapy
