‘Grim Milestone’ Of One Million Cancelled Operations In Sight As Second NHS Consultants Strike Begins As NHS consultants in England begin their second walkout in the latest round of industrial action in their dispute over pay, Danny Mortimer, deputy chief executive of NHS Confederation, said: “As NHS consultants start their second walkout – the 10th round of large-scale strikes by NHS staff in nine months – weary healthcare leaders and teams will be wondering how many more rounds of industrial action the NHS must endure, and how many more patients will have to suffer before all those involved find a way to finally bring this to a close. “Unfortunately, handling strikes has had to become routine for leaders, with many telling us they’re spending up to a third of their time planning for and dealing with the fallout of repeated walkouts. “While the work they’ve done has minimised disruption, they nonetheless see and fear the impact it is having on patients and staff alike. “With strike action backing onto a bank holiday weekend, this round will again have a significant impact on patients. Demand at A&E departments is usually higher on bank holiday weekends, but this combined with operating a Christmas Day level of service in the runup, means that increased pressures will in many places mean patients will be faced with severe delays. “Healthcare leaders are sympathetic to the concerns of senior medical staff regarding reform of their contract, but also know that this war of attrition with the government is eroding hopes of reducing the backlog and affecting patient care. “It’s too late to stop this walkout, but the failure to put an end to this situation has put the Prime Minister’s pledge to reduce waiting lists in real jeopardy; another round of industrial action after this one may deliver a knockout blow to backlog hopes. “All sides must do whatever it takes to avert the further walkout planned by consultants for September and prevent the NHS from reaching the grim milestone of one million cancelled operations.” Read More:

New Care Home Watchdog Standards Considered By City Council Residential and nursing homes in Stoke-on-Trent could have to reach new standards to be awarded future contracts from the city council. Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s Cabinet are meeting on Tuesday, September 10 to discuss a report: ‘Working Age Adults Older People’s Residential and Nursing Contract’. If councillors approve the report, the council would only award contracts to homes that are rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and adult social care services in England. If a home is waiting for the CQC to review its current rating, the council knows this can take some time. In these small number of cases, the council will allow those homes to tender for their next contracts and use its own checks and processes to make sure high standards are being met. The cabinet’s report sets out new and higher standards for looking after adults who need residential care across the city. The cabinet will also look at several changes to improve services in the local care sector through their duties under the Care Act 2014. Following the cabinet meeting, ongoing engagement with the care market will be undertaken and the options will go out to public consultation. Service users and their families will be encouraged and supported to get involved and share their views before any final decisions are made. Councillor Duncan Walker, cabinet member for adult services, said: “If we introduce these new contracts it would allow the council to standardise the levels of quality expected of these homes, using the CQC ratings as the benchmark. “It’ll bring in an extra level of reassurance for residents and their families knowing that we have a new stronger contract to raise the quality of care in the city. “If it’s brought in with the support of the cabinet, our social services team will work closely with our current and future providers. “The team will make sure they understand our new approach and are fully prepared for the steps they need to take to tender for future contracts.” Read More:

Dementia Less Common Among People Taking Certain Diabetes Drugs People who take certain drugs for type 2 diabetes appear to have a lower risk of dementia, according to new research published in the BMJ. Experts said the results were promising but would need confirming in clinical trials. Research – including the recent Lancet Commission report – has highlighted the link between diabetes and an increased risk of dementia. This has led to renewed focus on the possibility that diabetes drugs might reduce this added dementia risk. In the new study, researchers based in Korea used the country’s National Health Insurance Service database to identify 110,885 adults who were taking one of two different drugs – sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors, or dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors – to control their type 2 diabetes. Participants were aged 40-69 years, free of dementia and had started taking an SGLT-2 inhibitor between 2013 and 2021. A total of 1,172 participants newly diagnosed with dementia were identified during the study period. People taking SGLT-2 inhibitors appeared to have a lower risk of developing dementia during the study period, and the effect seemed greater with longer treatment duration. Experts cautiously welcomed the finding. “This study adds to substantial data from around the world linking diabetes to dementia risk, suggesting that treating conditions like diabetes can lower the risk of developing dementia” said Prof Tara Spires Jones, from the UK Dementia Research Institute, University of Edinburgh, who was not involved in the research. She added that future research was needed to understand how such treatments might protect the brain from developing diseases that cause dementia. Roughly a third of drugs in clinical trials for Alzheimer’s disease are already used for other conditions. Viagra, a commonly used drug to treat erectile dysfunction has shown potential to prevent vascular dementia. And liraglutide, a drug used to help with diabetes, weight loss and reducing the risk of heart disease may also slow the progression of early Alzheimer’s disease. “People affected by dementia urgently need effective treatments, as last week’s news of Alzheimer’s drug lecanemab’s rejection by NICE emphasised,” said Dr Jacqui Hanley, Head of Research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, which is funding several projects investigating the potential of drugs used for other diseases. “Using drugs have already been shown to be safe for use in people could potentially speed up the process of testing them in clinical trials against dementia, as well as making it significantly cheaper,” she added. “If we are to cure dementia, clinicians will need a toolkit of treatments which tackle different aspects of the disease and that can be used in combination. Research into repurposing drugs may help us do just that.” Read More:

Westwood Care Home Celebrates 50’s Day With Music And Memories Westwood care home, part of the Runwood Homes group, recently transformed their activity room into a lively 1950s-themed celebration. Residents, family members, and staff gathered for a nostalgic journey back to the golden age of rock and roll, enjoying a day filled with music, dancing, and mouthwatering treats. The highlight of the morning was a lively performance by Russ, a talented singer who delighted everyone with his spot-on Elvis impersonation. Dressed as the King of Rock and Roll, Russ had the room buzzing with excitement as he performed classic 50’s hits, filling the room with smiles, laughter, and plenty of dancing. The energy was infectious, with residents and their loved ones reliving the golden era of rock and roll. Adding to the festive atmosphere, the kitchen staff prepared an array of delectable cakes, reminiscent of the 1950s, which were enjoyed by all. The entire event was a resounding success, bringing together the community for a day of shared memories, music, and joy. Natasha and Chloe, Lifestyle Coordinators at Westwood care home, commented on the success of the event, saying, “50’s Day was a fantastic opportunity for our residents to reminisce about the past and relive those wonderful moments from their youth. The joy and happiness on everyone’s faces as they sang and danced to their favourite tunes were priceless. New Ways to Avoid a “Long Lie” New developments at leading mobility equipment innovator AAT GB are supporting Occupational Therapists in their fulfilment of RCOT guidance on falls. Data(1) reveals that of the 2.6million falls in the home each year by people over the age of 65, only 4%- 140,000- result in a trip to hospital. If people do not have the ability to pick themselves up, they face the prospect of a “long lie” whilst they wait for either a care giver or emergency services to pick them up. That can be more dangerous than the fall itself, experts say(2), physically and/or psychologically. AAT is rising to the challenge by expanding its range of easy-to-use, compact fall recovery options. Prescription of the aids has multiple benefits for elderly clients: - It eliminates the risk of a ‘long lie’ - It avoids adding pressure to already stretched ambulance crews - It removes the psychological worry for the client - It represents positive risk It further supports their care-givers, reducing effort and strain in the in physically helping the client back to sitting or standing. Observes AAT Director Peter Wingrave: “RCOT falls guidance states ‘contingency planning for the management of future falls that may occur should be explored. This may include advice and practice, where appropriate, on [] how to avoid the consequences of a ‘long lie’- lying on the floor after a fall for a period of 60 minutes or more.’ “The simple step of prescribing aids that empower the client to pick themselves up, that is easy for them to use, that can be re-allocated to someone else when they no longer need it, is surely a reasonable and practical consideration in any falls management strategy?” AAT’s fall recovery aids are all compact, fold-away solutions that are tried, tested and proven in domestic and healthcare environments. Battery-powered, the equipment is fully portable. AAT’s fall recovery equipment can safely restore anyone up to 150kg (23st) from being prone on the floor. With their integral seat, they give the client confidence and the time to rebalance. Details of AAT’s range of lifting devices can be found here: https://buff.ly/4fWdJ6m. AAT offers a free, no obligation assessment service to support OTs, and provides training of the recipient on the equipment’s correct usage as part of the service. Read More:

Blaucomm Ltd – Telecommunications & Networks Blaucomm’s Nurse Call Messaging Service (NMS) is the market leading solution to remove the dependency on noisy nurse call panels and pagers, through its intelligent software, which delivers the alerts straight to the care staff who need them. Care homes are rapidly introducing smartphones for digital care planning and eMar - now, the same devices can be used to receive the nurse call alerts they need for the residents under their care. Furthermore, Blaucomm NMS is deeply linked into Person Centred Software MCM, so call bell data is linked straight to care plans. This unlocks a huge benefit to care homes to enhance the staff performance with how they accept and respond to residents, which ultimately promotes better response times and visibility for management to audit their performance. The best part is that Blaucomm NMS links into your existing nurse call system - we work with all major brands such as Aidcall, ARM, Courtney Thorne, C-TEC, ENS, Intercall, Medicare, SAS and TeleAlarm. Care operators are constantly recognising Blaucomm NMS for its reliability and dependability to their care operations, which is why we’ve been chosen time and time again over other solutions. Head of IT Trudi Harrow at WCS Care had this to say about Blaucomm NMS: “We find Blaucomm is a genuinely fantastic company with a reliable product. Blueleaf And TENA Partner To Promote Best Practice And Sustainability In Continence Care With Bloom And Grow Workshops Blueleaf Care has partnered with global leading continence brand, TENA, to help care homes deliver better outcomes for residents, promote best practice in continence care and help reduce care home’s environmental impact. A series of Learning Circle sessions took place during World Continence Week (17-21 June) in 16 care homes across the UK to promote best practice in continence care for care home staff, with a team of experts from TENA explaining the health and sustainability benefits of using the right products for its intended purpose. With two out of three people in care homes requiring continence care, best practice can reduce its environmental impact and immeasurably improve residents’ quality of life. In addition to the education sessions, Blueleaf and TENA also marked World Continence Week by hosting a series of Bloom & Grow activity workshops for residents, providing sunflower seeds for them to sow in pots for their rooms or around the home. These sessions for residents are designed to support the care home’s commitment to provide social activities, which are beneficial to residents’ cognitive function; so too is connecting with nature by handling soil, watering and tending flowers. Ellen Brown, Sales and Marketing Director of Blueleaf Care, says encouraging best practice is a priority for Blueleaf: “Well managed continence care improves residents’ quality of life considerably, preventing avoidable accidents which can result in further health complications, but it also helps to improve sustainability in care homes. “With government priorities and CQC regulations steering our industry towards more sustainable practices, we’ll be doing all that we can support our care home customers. Collaboration is going to be key to a safe, responsible, and sustainable future. And by running this series of workshops we’re educating the carers on the right products to use for each resident, which will in turn reduce waste – and cost – as well as help to preserve the dignity and quality of life of the residents.” Richard Barker, Key Account Manager at TENA says World Continence Week provides a platform to break taboos in continence care: “Here at TENA, we’re educating care workers that using the right product for each resident is critical. In doing so, we are helping to prevent leakages and poor skin health, while also helping to reduce laundry costs and overall workload for care workers; freeing them up to spend their time caring for residents. “We want to encourage a new way of thinking for care homes and really see the value in ‘use better, use less’, directly helping to reduce costs and reduce the environmental footprint of care homes in the same process.” Read More:

LPA Now Getting a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a good idea for all of us and is particularly helpful for those who are in need of professional care. Anyone benefiting from residential or domiciliary care will need support from close family or friends to manage their financial affairs and to speak up for them if they become less able to do that for themselves. An LPA gives those you trust the legal authority to provide support in this way and removes the obstacles companies operate behind in the name of data protection. LPA Now’s home visiting service makes us ideally placed to assist people who are in a care situation. We solve the problem of finding a Certificate Provider which can be a major issue for care facility residents, as family members and care home employees are not permitted to perform this role. Our friendly staff will happily guide both donors or attorneys through applying for and registering an LPA, making the process as easy as possible. We are keen to build relationships with care providers and encourage you to contact us so that we can explain our referral package and how we can effectively work together. Please contact Malcolm Roberts on 01228 307360 or email: malcolm.roberts@lpanow.com Read More:
