Why we invested 📈 🚀 As climate change impacts intensify, the need for affordable preventative and primary care, diagnostics, and compliance support will also intensify 🏥. Millions of people are already feeling the negative health impacts as a result of heat stress, extreme weather, and infectious diseases. Like many other African countries, Tanzanians 🇹🇿 struggle to access affordable, quality healthcare. About 85% of Tanzanians lack access to the essential care they need. Medikea hybrid model blends round-the-clock telemedicine with physical clinics located in underserved communities to make trusted care convenient and cost-effective. 👉 Here’s why we are excited to have invested in Medikea: https://lnkd.in/d_v5hd2x cc: Desirè Ruhinda, MD, Elvis Silayo, MD #climatetech #climateresilience #africa

The world is experiencing the negative outcomes of climate change across industries like Agriculture etc. But healthcare is no exception. Climate change threatens everyone’s health. Every degree Celsius the world heats translates into a potentially devastating health outcome. Research finds climate change has exacerbated more than half of known human infectious diseases. As a health-tech company, one of the greatest challenges of our time will be to better understand this growing threat so that we can help protect human health. Medikea’s contribution to the global collective efforts in the fight against climate change by minimizing the negative impacts of climate change on people's health is something we are proud of. One example is the effects heat stress can have on the fetuses of pregnant women living/working in extreme temperatures. Exposure of pregnant women to high heat results in concerning rises in fetal heart rate, and reduced blood flow to the placenta as temperatures increase. Through our AnteNatal clinic program, we have been able to provide pregnant women with comprehensive care that can enable them to prevent heat stress-related pregnancy complications throughout their pregnancy journey until delivery. I believe, as much as we are focused on making high-quality healthcare easily accessible and more affordable to everyone. We must not ignore the existing threats that undo/slow the progress we are making to realize our vision. And as of now, climate change is a growing threat. We are proud of having Catalyst Fund as one of our early strategic partners in supporting our efforts in building a tech-enabled climate-resilient health system for Tanzania and Africa as the primary line of defense against climate–related shocks and stressors. Through the support from Catalyst Fund, we can scale up much-needed care to communities affected by the impacts of changing climate such as increasing vector–borne and diarrheal diseases, as well as climate–related hazards like heatwaves, floods, and air pollution. We are just getting started. Maxime Bayen Maelis Carraro Peter Ndichu Desirè Ruhinda, MD Karen Serem Waithaka

In #Rwanda, @Zipline's drones are delivering life-saving medicines to remote villages, ensuring timely access to over 10 million health products and 15 million vaccine doses. Meanwhile, in #Nigeria, Shelf Life by @Field Intelligence Inc. is revolutionizing pharmacy management, empowering over 3,200 pharmacies with affordable access to diverse, genuine medicines. These innovations highlight the potential of local solutions to solve #GlobalHealth challenges in #Africa. But to truly succeed, we need systemic change to foster greater #HealthSystem improvement. Greater collaboration and investment are key to driving sustainable impact and scaling these innovations across Africa. This article from the @WorldEconomicForum highlights the importance of #PublicPrivatePartnerships in supporting #LocallyLed solutions. I am impressed by existing programs like the Investing in Innovation (i3), which @Chemonics International co-sponsors along with @AmerisourceBergen, @Microsoft, and @MSD help foster the next generation of #innovative health solutions. Awesome to read the write up from Catalyst Fund on why they invested in Medikea and their mission to make healthcare in #Tanzania more accessible. Baobab Network first invested in Medikea in October 2022 and the progress Desirè Ruhinda, MD and Elvis Silayo, MD have made since then has been incredible 👏 Looking forward to more institutional #investors joining this exciting cap table in the future 🔥 https://lnkd.in/eTrPyVu5

Another thought-provoking session at World Economic Forum’s annual meeting this week—this one on access, equity and innovation in global health. It’s a “trendy” topic, but this session was elevated by the first-hand, on-the-ground experiences panelists brought. I was especially moved by Temie Giwa - Tubosun's experience standing up LifeBank—an on-demand delivery service for blood, oxygen and other urgent medical supplies—and then expanding it. LifeBank is a for-profit company with a business model of cross-subsidization, a setup that allows it to deploy a solution in, say, Lagos—which can afford to pay more than its rural neighbors—and then use it to cover outlying villages at a more affordable price point. The session even featured valuable contributions from the audience—notably, from Bernd Montag, CEO of Siemens Healthineers, who’s leading his organization to shift its mindset from metrics like units/equipment placed to more important and impactful ones like patients touched and, ultimately, positive patient impact. #healthequity #ruralhealth #Davos #wef
