I had a recent exchange with my friend, who was really excited about seeing one of her favorite authors speak at an in-person event. She mentioned that I probably would not know who the author was, but it was a big deal for her to see them speak. I mentioned that no, I didn’t know who the author was, but I related to her excitement about connecting on a topic that she was so interested in. I mentioned I had a similar feeling for an upcoming conference that I’m going to soon, on true crime. "A true crime convention?" she asked. Yes! That’s a thing. I think there’s a conference or convention for just about anything these days. I listen to a ton of true crime podcasts, stay up-to-date on wrongful convictions, and donate time and money to advocacy groups. It is an extension of my values of advocacy and development — to continue to learn how systems and processes work for and against groups of people and advocate for systemic change.
