Had the privilege of spending the last few days at a national offsite for Reading Partners. Great reminder of why the work that team does is so important for our communities. Did you know that 68% of 4th graders in the US--and a staggering 80% of kids of color--can't read proficiently by 4th grade, the age when education transitions from "learning to read" to "reading to learn," meaning that kids without sufficient reading skill then begin to fall increasingly behind in other subjects? This gap is highly correlated with lifelong socioeconomic outcomes such as high school graduation, incarceration, poverty, and lifetime earnings. The encouraging news is that Reading Partners has already demonstrated that interventions are both feasible and impactful. Targeting schools with the highest needs (and, often, the scarcest resources) with an individualized, science-based curriculum, Reading Partners proves year over year that kids can close the gap and that educational attainment and equity is not only possible, but that we have a clear path to get there.
