Milwaukee workers take stage in ‘FRONTLINE’ series from PBS about lost manufacturing jobs In the early 1990s, two Milwaukee families lost good-paying manufacturing jobs. For the next 30 years, they worked relentlessly to stay out of poverty and maintain stability. The success and challenges of the Stanleys and Neumanns are outlined in a new PBS “FRONTLINE” documentary, “Two American Families, 1991-2024.” https://lnkd.in/gAybGjmh #Manufacturing | #Jobs

South Florida Sun Sentinel published an op-ed attributed to Suffolk's Florida East Coast General Manager Tom Thrasher highlighting the need to attract more young people into trade careers to address the construction labor shortage. In the op-ed, Tom discusses the benefits of pursuing careers in the trades (i.e. diverse career paths, competitive salaries and attractive benefits) and ways vocational schools can recruit and train the next generation of workers. The op-ed also mentions Suffolk’s use of AI, robotics and data to make jobsites safer and more efficient; our strong partnerships with nonprofits that help attract young talent to construction (i.e. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County); and our commitment to the Million Women in Construction pledge to increase the number of women in our industry.

In the midst of the Great Depression, Detroit workers were unified in their efforts to ensure that they reaped the benefits of their contributions to the city's economy. "Through their activism, and at the ballot box, these workers helped to transform American capitalism in the 1930s," writes Michael McCulloch for Power At Work. To learn how these workers built their social contract - and how their efforts can inform the modern labor movement - click the link in the comments. For more worker power content, subscribe today!

Cybercrime Lead for MPS Prevent, Protect and Prepare Teams. Committed & compassionate leader & problem solver, able to operate at pace, under pressure, to deliver excellent results.
I’ve seen this headline (or ones like it) a few times now, and I must admit my first response was to roll my eyes and despair, but I’ve decided to try and look at this from a new angel. Maybe policing does need to think properly about the welfare of its people and being more radical with our approach. Yes the job is tough, and for it to be done well we need people who aren’t afraid to lean into the darkness and face horror head on, and in so doing being scarred (in many ways). We must be willing to bare this pain so others do not. That is our purpose and charge. However, surely we want those who have this huge challenge to undertake, in tip top condition as much as possible, ensuring they are effective and able to recover quickly and fight on? If there are experts saying that adjustments like giving people a space and time to have a nap (and let’s be honest cops out there, we’ve all had our sneaky napping spots) then why not? I can’t see the harm in someone having 20 mins shut eye if the science tells us it’s effective. And if we can give our people practical advice on things they can do at home to make them healthier, happier and more energised when they show up for duty, then great. Of course we are a 24hour service and people do need to accept that simple fact, but could there be clever ways to structure patterns so that they impact on officers less while still providing the same service? Got to be worth exploring. Ultimately times are tough right now for policing because there simply aren’t enough cops, and the demand is seemingly every increasing. This puts pressure on individuals. We need to recruit, and we need to be honest with these recruits at the early stage. This job is rewarding, amazing, eye opening, and can be the making of you, but all truly rewarding experiences come through adversity. They must be earned, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be looked after. So maybe, just maybe, policing could look at some new ideas, put in place some new strategies, and make some changes that help everyone (not just Gen Z). Of course some more money from the government and a pay rise would probably be of great help as well, but let’s focus on the things that are within our control.
Morning All, I grew up on Hill Street Blues, following the trials and tribulations of the staff of a run down precinct in a violent (but unspecified) City in the USA. Sure it was fiction, but it portrayed the difficulties of life in 'the job', the long hours, being 'on call' and the impact on family lives. When I joined the police in '94 I found the portrayal had been fairly accurate, and the problems dramatised were a realistic picture. When did we lose touch with reality? When did we think it started to be right to tell cops to have naps and more orgasms? Can no one see that taking this path is causing the issues in how we portray the job?
