Vote splitting occurs when similar candidates divide the support of like-minded voters, which weakens their chances of winning. This can accelerate hyper-partisanship in several ways: Extremes Thrive: Moderate candidates often split the vote among those with centrist views, allowing more extreme candidates with a dedicated base to win, even if they have less overall support. Discourages Diverse Choices: Voters may avoid voting for a preferred candidate out of fear that splitting the vote will help elect a candidate they strongly oppose, reinforcing #polarization between the two major parties. Reinforces the Two-Party System: As smaller parties or #independent candidates struggle due to vote splitting, the dominance of two parties entrenches a polarized, partisan system with little room for nuanced views.
