Packing up my "stuff" for an office day tomorrow, and checked the agenda for an in-person workshop I'm attending. The first item is "introduction and ice-breaker" which leads me to wonder if home-baked cookies would be a good contribution to breaking the ice. #OfficeDays #TeamBonding #HomeBaking

Getting back into hospitality and restaurants was an easier transition than I could have imagined after a 2.5 year hiatus. I was lucky enough to have my first project back be with my best friend Noam Grossman thinking about how to make a winter concept for a space that sold a summer, seasonal product- soft-serve. Soupside was born and we were lucky enough to have the support of talented chefs like andy baraghani, Eitan Bernath, Wilson Tang and more believe in the vision of community, charity, and innovation. We have 1.5 months to go but some early learnings: 1. Working with friends is hard but rewarding: Noam and I had some early bumps but we set our expectations, always communicated openly, and from there it was smooth sailing. 2. Product and brand will win: Though on the busiest corner of Mulberry and Spring, new concepts take time- we didn't have that. We had 6 months (3 of which are funky in New York) to launch, gain traction, and operate a concept. I did we get people to come? Exceptional product and an amazing brand with personal values. 3. It won't be perfect: We have had mishaps on cups, sold out of soup, had some spills, literally but each has been a learning for the next time we bring a concept to life. If you think your venue is obviously dog-friendly, think again. I know a pub called the Dog and Duck that doesn't allow dogs. And believe me, no dog parent likes going somewhere assuming it’s dog-friendly. It’s like going to a steakhouse and assuming they have vegetarian options. The issue also extends to staff. Sometimes, they don’t know whether dogs are allowed. Remember when that popular pizza chain didn't allow a service dog? Or, you might have a bar area where dogs are welcome, but you don’t want to promote it because people might assume dogs are allowed throughout the entire venue. I spend so much time searching websites to see if they mention being dog-friendly or calling the venue... How old school! Who calls these days? And if I had left it to my non-dog-owning friends, I wouldn’t have taken Lola anywhere! So, make it clear that you’re dog-friendly. I may have a tip for you — join WagIt. We make it easy for you and your dog-owning customers. PS - I just googled to see if BrewDog in New York was dog-friendly since not many places are, and was pleasantly surprised.
