Moving 57 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of rock away from a job site is hard logistically and costly to any project. Our own Andy Westbrook, P.E., senior project manager, worked with a team to not only reuse the materials on-site at the Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System West healthcare facility, but they also found ways to make the project easier to expand in the future. Check it out in the article published by Healthcare Facilities Today below. You’ll see out why we think Andy is one of the best PMs in the healthcare arena! https://lnkd.in/g6uSzhfY

The result always looks picturesque. The process is anything BUT!! Construction sites are busy, dirty and so noisy. Still, site visits are a favorite of mine. Here’s some footage of my visit to an SNF construction site. Something about that productive energy! #DIG #construction #interiordesign

Seeing the construction of a complex bridge pier at the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge at close quarters, further demonstrates how we make construction frictionless. #weareheretohelp #improvement #constructability
Fantastic presentations at last week's AIB industry breakfast from each Michelle Zuvich and Sam Freshney about their respective approaches of delivering key infrastructure and built assets on the Brisbane River. I had no idea that the tidal, geotechnical and city conditions of our river city introduced so many challenges and it's interesting to hear about the innovative solutions applied to address these. Especially fascinating was Sam's exploration of the structural intricacies in the complex single-mast arrangement of the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge. It's been one thing to interact with this element in the model environment, but another thing altogether to hear about the considerations faced by the on-site execution. One thing I do take away, if you need complex marine construction advice, reach out to Michelle or Sam, and if you're looking for innovative reinforcement detailing approaches, have a chat with Toby Devaus. Emerging plans for the River Mersey tidal scheme, set to be the world's largest, have been laid out by Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram. They indicate a pursuit of a barrage between the Wirral and Liverpool as the desired choice for the extensive Mersey Tidal Power operation. The envisaged barrage, produced under the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s (LCRCA’s) scheme, will comprise 28 potent turbines, sluices, and maritime navigation locks, capable of generating a substantial 700MW capacity. This innovative project aims to furnish the world with fresh, predictable energy for an impressive 120 years whilst simultaneously spawning myriad job opportunities in both its creation and management. A unique feature of this scheme is the proposal of a pioneering cycling and pedestrian pathway across the river linking Liverpool and Wirral. The project aims to become active by 2040, utilizing “mature technology,” with each of the 28 turbines producing 25MW.

How did you end up where you are doing what you are doing? I found my passion for buildings by testing them to destruction😀 Really just blowing them up. 💥 In a previous life myself and several other hardy souls would venture to the North West of Scotland for several months every year. Once there buildings and parts of buildings would be erected, fully fitted out ready for use. The great and good from the construction world, scientists and manufacturers would be present to witness the trial. As the Trials Officer I was responsible for the Programme and Project Management of all tasks, and most importantly the safety of all teams and visitors. It was great fun with many moving parts. Great learning curve understanding photography, meteorological impacts, explosive types, etc, etc and learning lots about the people involved. It was great seeing the building process of many materials being tested for the first time, some never used again. But also the growth of a building and it taking shape, the fit out and occupation (by dummies). Then the full destruction and disposal of all parts of it as responsibly as possible. It gave a true understanding of the “cradle to grave” for materials used. And I left with most of my faculties intact. What’s your story? #projectmanagement #facilitiesmanagement Nice picture, not one of mine.

Take opportunities and do not let them pass you by. More often than not, we are guilty of concentrating on something so specific we ignore everything else. The energy you expend is acknowledged, but may not always be returned in the form you think. #property #propertymanagement #propertymaintenance #blockmanagement #blockmaintenance #building #buildingconstruction #buildingservices #contractors

🚿 Sewage overflow isn't just a nuisance to our senses - it poses a serious threat to water quality and ecological balance in our waterways. That's why the Potomac River Tunnel is a crucial project for Washington, D.C., spanning 8.8 kilometres (5.5 miles) to control combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into the Potomac River. As part of the Clean Rivers Project, this initiative aims to enhance the water quality of the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers and Rock Creek by bolstering the sewer system's capacity. Once operational, the tunnel is expected to reduce CSOs by 93% during average rainfall, making a significant impact on environmental preservation. With a diameter of 5.5 metres (18 feet), the tunnel will weave its way deep beneath the Georgetown waterfront, tracing the edges of the National Mall and East Potomac Park, reaching past Hains Point to connect by gravity to the existing Anacostia River Tunnel. Together with CBNA (Civil & Building North America Inc.), Halmar International, and Hatch, COWI will deliver on the design-build contract. “COWI will lead the design of the tunnel and adits, and provide geotechnical support for the entire project. Working with CBNA-Halmar through the tender process and now the actual project has been very exciting and gratifying for our engineers. In a design and build project, it is always rewarding to see our design being implemented especially on such a critical project as the Potomac River Tunnel,” said Steven Kramer, PE, FASCE, COWI Senior Project Director.
