DONEGAL MOVES TO ZERO: Recently we handed over two ‘A’ rated educational schemes for secondary colleges, completing a busy period of installs across the ‘Hills of Donegal’. 🍃Situated on one of the most picturesque sites in all of Ireland, just on the edge of Mulroy Bay, Milford, a new, two-storey classroom block is now fully-utilised at Mulroy College. Spanning over 880 sqm, the new block consists of seven mainstream classrooms, three SET rooms, two offices and washrooms. Completed in a sargasso and oyster grey colourway that’s sympathetic to the backdrop of Mulroy Bay, Mulroy College is now benefitting from a new building that’s comfortable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly, creating a healthy learning environment for the school community. 🍃Just 15 kilometers away, a new energy-efficient and sustainable modular building has been installed at Errigal College, Letterkenny. Offering an additional 840sqm of space and built to #GreenBuildingPractices, the standalone, two-story block was completed within six months, and has already achieved a 'best in class' BER A rating. With both buildings manufactured offsite in our premises in Co. A group of students in my PR Campaigns class developed a plan aiming to help stop Salem, Oregon residents idling their cars. I was glad to hear that the plan was gaining traction from professionals in the field interested in applying our work. There are a handful of reasons why this plan makes sense for communities across the US. ✅Low hanging fruit: simplicity and focus on the (non) idling idea, meeting people where they are at ✅Language: non-divisive and simple (clean, pollution), avoiding complex or politicized expressions ✅Positive reinforcement: building community around positive behavior change vs fines, penalties and ordinances ✅Inside-out approach: starting with the city and leading by example ✅Bottom-up initiative: bringing in schools and let children and families come up with their own visualization of the problem and solution, rewarding and displaying the best ✅ Broad platform for alternatives: stopping idling is a great opportunity to start talking about alternative methods, walking, biking and public transit. I'm proud of the strategic work our students have done and glad that it has an afterlife providing ideas for other communities striving to become more sustainable. Phase I is the conversion of the grounds into a working urban farm and community space. Phase II is the redevelopment of the school structure. 🏛️ South Dakota State University’s campus is 387 acres, and is home to more than 160 buildings. It’s a place where thousands of faculty, staff and students live, work and learn every day. For Facilities and Services, #SDState operates like “a city within a city.” Dozens of workers spend countless hours cleaning, servicing and maintaining campus and its operations. Campus has evolved throughout time and has grown considerably in recent history. According to Facilities and Services, since 2010, 30 buildings have been constructed, enhancing the student experience. New residence halls, academic buildings, athletic facilities and agriculture structures are now an integral part of the SDSU experience. Facilities and Services has also been able to oversee the renovation or revitalization of some of our more historic campus buildings. Recent projects include iconic structures like Lincoln Hall, First Bank and Trust Arena and the Coughlin Campanile.
