Adoption is on the rise in Ireland, with an inspiring 62% of pet owners choosing to adopt rescue animals! 🐶🐱 Petmania 2024 Pet Rescue and Adoption Report reveals a growing commitment to animal welfare, but it also sheds light on the challenges still facing rescue centers across the country. From the need for more neutering and microchipping to the struggle to rehome senior pets, there’s so much more we can do to support these incredible organisations. 💖 RTÉ 2FM’s Laura Fox and her rescue dog Thor are leading the charge to raise awareness and inspire even more support for our local rescue centers. Can you make a difference to animal shelters if you can't adopt or foster? Absolutely YES! Summer is a particularly exciting time for shelters. With warm weather comes an influx of pets, and while it might seem challenging, it's also an opportunity for communities to come together and support these wonderful animals. Trends come and go—during the pandemic, many people adopted puppies for companionship. Now, with life returning to a busy routine, some find they need extra help caring for their pets. That's where our incredible community steps in to ensure every pet finds the love and care they deserve. There's a constant flow of animals, especially dogs, who are ready to be loved. This is where YOU can shine. Now is the perfect time to make a difference, even if you can't adopt a dog. (Though if you can, there are HUNDREDS of wagging tails ready for a forever home at shelters around the country. 🐕. Donate food. Most shelters welcome unopened bags or cans of food, so if you have any surplus or your pet didn't take to a certain brand, consider donating it to your local shelter. ⏰ ⏰ Donate your time. From comforting animals to prepping toys and treats, there's always something you can help with. Your time and compassion can make a world of difference, ensuring these pets feel loved and cared for. #PlannedGiving can include many facets of a #donor's life, and pets are certainly an increasingly common topic of conversation and consideration. All #nonprofit organizations need policies for how they will deal with gifts with "strings" (like care of a pet) and animal-focused charities, in particular, need to be prepared for gift offers with animal care provisions. Will you always say, "no" (or "yes")? Is "yes," dependent upon the gift size/terms? There isn't a right or wrong answer, you just want to make sure you know what you will do so you can communicate that clearly and confidently with potential donors when it comes up. 2024 taught me that transformative philanthropy isn't just about the size of the gift - it's about aligning donor vision with opportunities for lasting impact. Moving from healthcare to animal welfare showed me how true this is across causes. At Dogs Trust, every donation helps create second chances. Last year: - 13,374 dogs found care through our 22 rehoming centres - 10,612 dogs discovered their forever homes - Over 4,000 dogs experienced safety through fostering - Our Freedom program helped both people and pets escape domestic abuse - 481,209 children learned about dog safety But numbers only tell part of the story.
