Across the country, summer traditions mean picnics and barbecues. But for some families, summer highlights the challenge of food insecurity. Many families that rely on free or reduced school-provided meals struggle to feed their children when school is out of session during the summer months. During these months, 30 million children face unreliable access to nutritious meals, as reported by Feed the Children. Ensuring every child has healthy meals is vital. Help Us Fight Food Insecurity in Texas Did you know that nearly 4 million Texans struggle with food insecurity? That's about one in every eight residents, facing a daily challenge to find enough food for a healthy, active life. Our PB&J Days model shows how we can make a real impact together. If just 47,619 people contribute $20 each, we can make enough PB&J sandwiches to make a significant difference. This represents less than 1% of our state’s population coming together to fight food insecurity. One sandwich may seem small, but it can be the first step toward discussions to provide greater assistance and support for those in need. It all starts with a sandwich. Join us in making a difference. Together, we can solve this. To learn more about how you can start a PB&J Day in your area or support us directly in San Antonio, please go to our website, pbandjdays.com. #food #SpreadKindness #pbandjdays #MakeADifference #help #service #homeless #endhunger

Let’s talk about Food Security 🥦🫐🍓 1 in 5 kids experience food insecurity at home. School breaks can be a time of uncertainty and stress for some families. This Spring Break, over 8000 meals will be distributed across seven school sites. KidSafe aims to fill the gaps by providing daily nutritious meals, take-home groceries, and unlimited snacks. Food security forms one of the core focuses of our programming. We believe every child deserves the nourishment and opportunities they need so they can thrive. 🍲 𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗗 = 𝗦𝗖𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗟 👨🎓 Our food & wellness programs form the very backbone of support that disadvantaged students need in order to attend school. For many families living with food insecurity, this program makes the difference between sending their children to class, or out to work to help put food on the table. In the next few posts, we’ll examine the impact of this crucial program, from daily school meals to food banks that have been developed with a laser focus on families living with the direst food insecurity. In total across all our food programs last year ... 🍚 66 tons of rice 🍗 13 tons of meat 🥕 17 tons of vegetable ... were consumed. That’s a whole lot of nutrition going where it’s needed most! Watch the video to see where our food program first began: daily meals, available to the +700 students at our rural school locations. Because with full tummies, kids can stay in class and focus on the lesson. Because Food = School … and #schoolistheanswer 💛

I would also like to know if there are studies in the rates of food waste in 2020-2023 I suspect that food waste is also on the rise. This is the paradox!! We can’t just accept this as a society and not make some big changes in policies.
This piece by the great Danielle Nierenberg has some jaw-dropping stats: - 13% (17 million households) reported being food insecure." That's up 4M in the last year! - 17% of households with children = food insecure. That's....crazy. There's a passage in Greg Boyle. S. J.'s great book Tattoos on the Heart where every night a former gang member who is now a father waits for his children to finish eating before taking his first bite, so he makes sure they are never hungry as he was. It's a beautiful, moving passage. It's also...terribly sad that so many are in that dad's position. We all know it's hard out there...for everyone...to make ends meet. We need to at least figure out how to put food on, ahem, every table. Sam https://lnkd.in/gz3SuBzq

Interesting read.
From a young age, children are learning about ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods, rather than ‘nutritious’ and ‘non-nutritious” eats. The labels we give food create a novelty around them, particularly when these so-called ‘bad’ foods are used as rewards for children for doing ‘good’ deeds; a rather confusing reward system in which children are encouraged to do ‘good’ things in order to receive what they understand to be ‘bad’ foods.
