Our co-founder, Pedro Resende, recently participated in a dynamic panel discussion on Academic vs Non-Academic Science Careers at the Hello Bio LabLife Conference. Pedro highlighted the importance of making informed decisions when it comes to career paths in STEM. His advice? 💡 Talk to a diverse range of individuals, including those who have stayed in academia and those who have ventured into non-academic roles. Seek guidance from supervisors, mentors, advisors, counsellors and coaches, is key to navigate your career journey effectively. 💡Pedro also advocated for a growth mindset, stating: "You need to be constantly willing to improve not only yourself, but also to have the mentality to fully embrace the project you are working on, or the team you are working with, and want to improve them too." 🚀 You can check the insightful contributions of Samuel Dada and Danielle Tomasello in the Hello Bio article linked in the comments. Expert in Corporate Governance and Sustainable Finance | Award-winning Researcher and Teacher | Senior Lecturer in Finance, University of Wollongong
I had the honour of delivering a guest lecture, "Pitching Research: Inform, Inspire, Transform", for HDR students enrolled in the Business Research Proposal subject, kindly invited by Prof. Millicent Chang (Deputy Head of Business School, University of Wollongong. The session was structured around three pivotal themes: Inform: I discussed the fundamentals of pitching research framework founded by Prof. Robert Faff, explaining its core elements and purpose and how it empowers novice researchers (e.g., PhD students) to effectively plan and initiate their research projects and engage with their research advisors and supervisors for meaningful conversation, feedback and guidance; https://lnkd.in/gazpbrP Inspire: I shared my decade-long journey from being an end user to a significant contributor and leader in the pitching research framework. It’s been an exciting path filled with growth and opportunities, and I hope my experiences can light a path for novice researchers. Transform: I guided the students on taking actionable steps to integrate pitching research into their research work. This included; 1. Preparing the pitch template, https://lnkd.in/gBCdwFqQ (web portal) or http://bit.ly/385qFVV (word file) 2. Becoming a member of the International Society of Pitching Research for Responsible Science (InSPiR2eS), https://lnkd.in/dWS6sZnE 3. Completing the pitching research matters micro-credential, https://lnkd.in/dtvSzzHa 4. Participating in the InSPiR2eS global pitching research competition 2024, https://lnkd.in/gxrvUQRB. The goal of the lecture was not just to inform but to ignite a passion for pitching research and empower the next generation of researchers to make meaningful contributions. I’m excited to see the impact these students will make as they embark on their research journeys! #Phd #Research #PitchingResearch #HDRStudents #InSPiR2eS #UOW

Sharing an a 1-year research fellowship (stipend: $40,000) from my friends and colleagues at the Kapor Foundation: The research should be focused on topics at the intersection of racial #equity, #accountability, and the #tech ecosystem (i.e., K-12 and postsecondary computer science education, tech workforce issues, tech accountability/regulation, venture capital, and responsible AI). Two types of fellowships: - dissertation/thesis fellowships to support graduate students' final year of data analysis and writing for their research and - investigative reporting fellowships to support journalists' deep research and reporting activities as they develop long-form narratives. Kapor is prioritizing research focused on national populations and trends or those in our priority cities and states: Oakland, CA; Atlanta, GA; and Detroit, MI. (Local research happening outside these regions is less likely to be funded in this fellowship.) A more detailed overview of the fellowship is attached here.

Founder of TwentyOne Skills 🎓 Digital Upskilling for PhDs & Postdocs | E-Learning for Academic Institutions | Career Events for Scientist
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 '𝗪𝗵𝘆' 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 🎓🎯 I had an inspiring discussion this week with Professor Dr. Bettina Maisch from Hochschule München. We covered many topics, but this one really stuck with me: During our conversation, Bettina emphasised the importance of starting a #PhD for the 'right' reasons. We quickly moved on to the next topic. But after our conversation ended, I thought about what she said and I think she made an important point. Especially in the early stages of their careers, researchers often focus on the 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 and the 𝗛𝗢𝗪 rather than the 𝗪𝗛𝗬: 🔹 How do I get my paper published in the right journal? 🔹 How can I secure funding or grants for my research projects? 🔹 How can I make my research more interdisciplinary or collaborative? 🔸 What skills and qualifications do I need to get a tenure-track position? 🔸 What are the steps involved in developing a strong research proposal? 🔸 What networking strategies can help me build professional relationships in my field? These are all highly relevant questions, no doubt. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗛𝗬? The 'why' of your #research, or your #career in general, goes beyond the mechanics of achieving goals (the 'what') and the methods used to achieve those goals (the 'how'). 👉 Your 'why fosters a sense of purpose that drives you to pursue your work with 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 and 𝗱𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 👉 Your 'why enables you to face challenges with a clearer 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 of your 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀. 👉 Your 'why ensures that your efforts are not just about achieving external success, but are aligned with your inner 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 and 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. This is what came to mind after thinking about it for a while. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸? 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲? #phdlife #phdjourney #gradschool
