𝗔 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 🇮🇳 This young boy, collecting recyclables, stands respectfully during the national anthem. It's a powerful reminder that respect for our nation transcends background and circumstance. To those film stars, politicians, and self-proclaimed intellectuals who often make fun of our national honors and refuse to sing the national anthem, take note and learn from this young man's dignity. But the bigger question is... 𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒍? Let's shift the narrative. Instead of placing blame, let's focus on how we, as a community, can support the education and well-being of children in need. Here are some ways to make a difference: 💠 Share resources: Connect with local NGOs or programs dedicated to educating and supporting underprivileged children. Do you know of any that we can help promote? 💠 Donate time/supplies: Volunteering or providing school supplies can significantly impact a child's education. Can you spare some time or resources? 💠 Advocate for change: Push for policies that ensure every child has access to quality education. What initiatives can we support together? Indigenous-led non-profits put in tremendous effort to address the inequities and challenges Indigenous communities face. Allies can play a crucial role in supporting these efforts by empowering Indigenous-led organizations rather than competing with them. The Laidlaw Foundation chair and other changemakers faced a test of their values when a social impact bond for reducing Indigenous youth incarceration was awarded to Marymound Inc., a Winnipeg-based non-Indigenous organization with Catholic Church ties. Indigenous leaders expressed feeling "hurt" and "blindsided" when the province announced the program, backed by nine investors, in late 2022. In response, the Winnipeg Indigenous Executive Circle (WIEC), representing 32 Indigenous organizations, invited the bond’s nine investors to Winnipeg for a direct conversation. All nine attended.
