In the midst of ongoing public and governmental debates surrounding the feasibility of Australia's 80% by 2030 renewable energy targets, Monash University’s Climateworks Centre has put forth a compelling call to aim even higher, advocating for an 85% target by 2035.
Additionally, CEO of Climate Change Authority, Brad Archer, has voiced cautious optimism, suggesting that reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 65 to 75% by 2035 could be ambitious yet achievable for Australia.
State bodies are also rethinking their targets, with NSW, Victoria, Queensland, and Tasmania, responsible for three-quarters of the nation’s emissions, announcing emissions reduction targets of at least 70% by 2035.
As these targets evolve, we anticipate further amendments at both state and national levels. In this dynamic landscape, developers must remain agile to meet market demands and government regulations.
Crucially, amidst these transitions, governments must ensure access to electricity supply and address land access concerns. This is particularly vital in regional Australia, where climate change impacts like sea level rise, and extreme weather events pose significant challenges.
The Climate Change Authority says managing risks from major developments such as wind, solar farms, and transmission lines in farming regions is imperative. While farmers may stand to benefit financially, they must also adapt farming practices to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change impacts. In the same right, communities affected by climate change are encouraged to foster new industries and retrain workforces to be able to withstand climate and economic demands.
In the lead-up to 2030 targets, the priority remains clear: transitioning Australia's energy landscape in a manner that not only benefits Australians but also positions the nation for economic vitality.
