Italian energy supermajor Eni and Italian infrastructure company Snam S.p.A. have started carbon dioxide (CO2) injection activities for phase 1 of the Ravenna Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) Project. Norway's Equinor has announced that it has scrapped plans to export so-called blue hydrogen to #Germany because it is too expensive and there is insufficient demand. Equinor and Germany's RWE signed a MOU in January 2022 to build a hydrogen supply chain for German power plants to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The plans included producing #hydrogen from natural gas in combination with carbon capture and storage - known as blue hydrogen - in #Norway and exporting it to hydrogen-ready gas power plants in Germany via the world's first #offshore hydrogen pipeline. Fascinating panel discussion in Lisbon dmg events - #LESummit on the future of #naturalgas. Some thoughts below: - In the past natural gas positioned as a #transition fuel. - This positioning under pressure as: a) growing global focus on methane emissions and the need to reduce these for greater impact in addressing overall #ghgemissions; b) COP28 highlighted the need to transition away from hydrocarbons. - That said, there remains a strategic rationale to use gas across several dimensions: a) #energysecurity: the need to secure reliable and affordable gas supplies. A salient theme in Asia (note Australia’s announcement to use gas post 2050) https://lnkd.in/eBgKyFrK; b) gas power generation coupled with CCUS to complement renewables and address intermittency until #BESS and renewables are scaled up; c) the need to decarbonise the grid in regions where coal is the dominant fuel source (e.g. Asia). - However, all gas companies will need to address and reduce emissions as their licence to operate. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), “Upstream and downstream methane emissions could be reduced by around 75% via measures such as leak detection, repair programmes and installing emissions control devices.” https://lnkd.in/ef2u5viF - Regulatory pressure will accelerate this.
