Running a retail business, especially one focused on plus-sized fashion for African American women, was a challenge for James Rhee when he took over Ashley Stewart in 2013. The brand was struggling, and the market was not giving these women the attention they deserved. The plus-size women's apparel market is a $30.7 billion business, but Ashley Stewart faced two challenges—catering to full-figured African American women and staying profitable. Amid efforts to celebrate women's empowerment and inclusivity, the pandemic hit, forcing Ashley Stewart to close its 88 stores. The struggle intensified, but Rhee's commitment to his employees and customers remained strong. In a crisis, Rhee prioritized people over profits. He transformed store employees into community outreach workers, nurturing relationships with customers. This 'people-first' approach, while impacting the bottom line, emphasized the importance of maintaining customer trust—a crucial aspect in any sales strategy. Rhee's initial plan to turn around Ashley Stewart involved placing the Black woman at the center of the business narrative. By building an ecosystem tailored to their needs and preferences, he created a retail model with a mathematically sound supply/demand equation. This strategy supported a marketing approach leveraging highly engaged customer relationships. Great that female leaders are breaking the#glassceiling and being appointed to CEO roles at top ASX listed companies. Though the recent announcement of Amanda Bardwell as Woolworths new CEO is making me think, are women breaking the glass ceiling to fall off the #glasscliff? Qantas, Coles, RBA, PwC (for a short stint), Virgin (at the height of the pandemic) and now Woolies have all appointed female CEOs when facing difficult times - senate inquiries, brand/ value erosion, going under - to name a few. Many studies have shown that female CEOs’ and leaders are good for the bottom line. The optics are also no doubt good. The organisations may argue that the changes were in flight, but are we offering female leaders a level playing field or setting them up to fail by making them the the face of/ accountable for the cleanup of a crisis long in the making amidst growing scrutiny⁉️Thoughts❓https://lnkd.in/dA8CfHSC

Why should North American CPG brands set their sights on the UK market? 🌎 The answer is pretty simple – the potential is enormous, and the barriers to entry are relatively low - a winning combination! What makes the UK stand out? - A robust grocery market that ranks third in Europe! - An environment that thrives on innovation, embracing new products and trends. - Consumer preferences align closely with those in North America. - The language and cultural fit provide a seamless transition. - Early adopters of North American trends. - A considerable presence of US brands in the market already, showing it can be done! 💪 However, it's crucial to recognize that each brand's decision to venture into the UK market is unique. I love an opportunity to start my day with some retail therapy.. even if it’s not in the traditional sense! This morning Craig Woolford facilitated by Wi Liem Chua and Kirsten Ridgway shared some key insights into the year that was for retail, and looked to what lies ahead. Key takeaways included: 🔎 While retail sales only grew by 1.8% in FY24, this trend incorporates a mean reversion following the post COVID boom that shouldn’t be ignored ⬆ FY25 retail sales growth of 2.9% is expected 🥊 Gross margins may be up, but retailers are going to have to work hard to keep them there 💰 Discretionary (non-retail) spend is up - good news for retail but retailers will need to work hard to attract budget-conscious consumer dollars away from travel/leisure and other non-retail categories ➕ A number of retailers have implemented limited price increases, resulting in more pressure being placed on volumes and product mix to drive revenue gains 📉 Excess inventory positions have largely been resolved 💻 Online is back in growth mode after a depressed CY23 👨💼👩💼 Wage rate growth for FY25 is 4.25% - well ahead of sales growth, forcing retailers to closely examine opportunities to enhance productivity 🛍 Floor space per capita is expected to decline, calling floor space productivity into focus (whilst requiring consideration of balancing customer experiential expectations) Great to be part of insightful retail discussions at Grant Thornton Australia. #retaildreamteam #retailtrends #grantthornton
